In New ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children’ Trailer Tim Burton Almost Creates Parody Of ‘X-Men’ Movies

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children showcases a weird but thrilling trailer that looks like a cross between Harry Potter and X-Men. Children discovering they have abilities that other people can’t understand is definitely out of the superhero canon. The new Tim Burton movie is from a 2011 book by the same name, supposedly a children’s book, that has interesting photographs sprinkled within its pages. This seems more like a horror children’s story, taking the weirdness level beyond Harry Potter in a way that characterizes Tim Burton and Miss Peregrine’s book author Ransom Riggs.

If you are seeing a striking similarity to the iconic school for mutants from X-Men movies and comics in the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children trailer, the similarity gets even more plausible when you consider that the screenwriter, Jane Goldman, also helped write the first film in the latest X-Men movie trilogy, 2011’s X-Men: First Class. Before that, Goldman also helped write the screenplay for comic book movie Kick-Ass, so don’t be surprised by the major superhero feel and storyline that seems to come through in the trailer.

The new trailer is equal amounts scary, intriguing, and suspenseful. It’s an incredibly well done introduction to a movie that you may or may not want to see. Samuel L. Jackson shows up midway with gray eyes and hair, speaking in a voice likely to cause shivers. It’s certainly a break from the type of roles he’s had lately. How will he ever go back to playing Nick Fury in Marvel movies after this?

Nineteen-year-old Asa Butterfield plays the main protagonist, probably most famous for his roles in Ender’s Game, the movie based on the classic Orson Scott Card science fiction novel, and Hugo, the fun, Martin Scorsese-directed 3D period flick. Before Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children comes out, Asa will play a boy who returns to Earth after growing up on Mars in The Space Between Us.

As the Hollywood Reporter reports, Ransom Riggs will put out more books in the Miss Peregrine’s series before the movie comes out, as Penguin Books has set him up with new book deals since this movie was set in motion. Those wishing to follow more of the story can wait for those books, or also read the original Miss Peregrine’s, which sold over 4 million copies and stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for over 100 weeks. Two more books related to Peregrine’s have already been published.

Director Tim Burton lends his idiosyncratic touch to Riggs’s story. All of Burton’s movies have a humorously dark feel, something that he hoped to capitalize on by bringing back fan favorite Beetlejuice. As Alternative Press reports, he finally confirmed he was working on a sequel to his 1988 classic Beetlejuice movie back in 2014. Although fans are waiting to see the original cast and to see Michael Keaton back under all that makeup, there has been little news on any production, making the chances for that movie’s release look slim. Beetlejuice, just like much of Burton’s work, stands somewhere between horror and humor. Whether a character like Beetlejuice can have the same effect at the box office almost 30 years after his last movie appearance remains a question, as tastes and trends have changed.

Fans of comic book movies won’t have to wonder why Samuel L. Jackson was absent in the last huge Marvel movie, as they will see him looking particularly ominous here, and with an army of skeletons at his side seemingly looking to make things hard for the children in Miss Peregrine’s care.

Eva Green plays Miss Peregrine, looking similar to Angelina Jolie in Maleficent. Green stars in TV show Penny Dreadful. In the season finale, her character dies, and the show’s producers have announced that there will not be a Season 4, so Green is free to perhaps be available if 20th Century Fox decides they need sequels to Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
