Ed Boon Claims The ‘Mortal Kombat’ Cross-Over With ‘Killer Instinct’ Will Be An Xbox One Exclusive
Ed Boon, the co-creator of the Mortal Kombat, made an interesting statement pertaining to the game series possibly crossing over with Killer Instinct. Boon claims if such a crossover were developed, it would be an Xbox One exclusive.
According to ICMX, Ed Boon’s statement came as a response to a fan recommendation for a potential Mortal Kombat crossover. Boon responded by expressing his love for Killer Instinct. He also said a cross over with the classic fighting game originally created by Rare would be interesting, but he said if such were to happen, the game would have to be a Xbox One exclusive. This is not surprising given the Killer Instinct reboot is a Microsoft project from the ground up.
I loves me some KI but a crossover would have to be Xbox exclusive. https://t.co/bb69z4gQCw

It is interesting that Ed Boon would mention Killer Instinct out of all the fighting game series available. Why would Boon choose Killer Instinct when there are far more popular fighting game series such as those developed by Capcom or Aksys Games? It is quite possible the reason why Boon chose Killer Instinct are the similarities both game series have. Both utilize unique combos, both have over-the-top characters, and both utilize their version of finishers.
And to be fair, the Mortal Kombat series is no stranger to cross overs. According to GameRant, it was briefly involved with a potential television-based crossover project with the Street Fighter Series back in 1997 before it cancelled. A crossover that did succeed had the Mortal Kombat characters fight against iconic DC Comics in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.
Mortal Kombat’s first crossover had potential, but many issues arose simply because the game differentiated from previous Mortal Kombat titles by shaving off some of its iconic blood, gore, and violence for a teen rating. Also, some of the DC Universe characters, specifically the super heroes like Batman and Superman, would not deter from their characters in which they did not have fatalities. Instead, they were given a new type of finisher known as a Heroic Brutality. If there is ever a Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe sequel, it is quite possible it will be far more violent from the first game. Another popular fighting game co-created by Ed Boon under NetherRealm Studios is Injustice: Gods Among Us, which became the DC fighter fans have been clamoring for. The roster was fantastic, it was aggressive, and had an amazing story worth following. There is even a bit of a crossover in the game as Scorpion from the Mortal Kombat Series is a playable character.
Ultimately, we will have to wait for any Mortal Kombat vs. Killer Instinct game. At E3 2016, it was announced that Injustice 2, the sequel to Injustice: Gods Among Us, was being developed. Gorilla Grodd, Supergirl, and Atrocitus the Red Lantern, were featured as new characters in the game as they join returning characters Batman, Superman, and Aquaman. Also from the trailer, we know the Flash will most-likely be a character too.[Image via Netherrealm Studios’ Promotion of Mortal Kombat X]
