‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 8: Nina Dobrev Returns As New Character To Avoid Ian Somerhalder?

The Vampire Diaries co-star Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder have always remained fans’ favorites, even after their high-profile breakup. After the couple’s split in 2013, viewers started speculating if they would ever see these two stars sharing the same screen space or not. After Season 6, the actress left TVD due to her other commitments, but now there are reports that she will return to the series, but not as the character she portrayed in all the six seasons.

Earlier this year, The CW officially announced that TVD will return to the network for an eight season. The upcoming season is rumored to be its last because of its poor ratings from the fans after the departure of Dobrev and the recently confirmed departures of Somerhalder and Kat Graham. Series’ showrunner Julie Plec recently teased about Dobrev’s return to the show. In an interview with TV Line, Plec stated that it would be fun to bring her back in the series.

“In my opinion, she was very clear about what she wanted the next step in her life to be, and she’s doing a great job of achieving that. So I’m sticking with my side of the plan, which is to bring her back at the very end.”

Dobrev-Somerhalder may be thrilled to hear the news that there is a possibility of former couple’s reunion. On the other hand, many viewers think that her return to the series is not necessary. According to Design & Trends, many viewers of The Vampire Diaries think that the story has moved ahead without the presence of Dobrev and there is no such need to bring her back.

According to Parent Herald, many fans of The Vampire Diaries have expressed their desire to bring Dobrev as Katherine, and not Elena. In an interview with E! News, Dobrev said that she still loves Somerhalder and care about him a lot.

“I love him and the friendship is still strong and I think he’s great and I care about him, and that didn’t change. Yes, we’re professional and that’s fine. We were friends long before we dated and we still are now.”

If Dobrev reprises her role of Katherine in the show, it may be because she wants to avoid her ex-boyfriend, who is very happy with Nikkie Reed and does not want to jeopardize his personal life.

The Vampire Diaries premiered on September 10, 2009, and it featured the story of a small fictitious town in Virginia, which is haunted by supernatural beings like witches, werewolves and vampires. The story followed Elena Gilbert (Dobrev) as she fell in love with a vampire, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). As the story progressed, Elena was found falling in love with Damon Salvatore (Somerhalder). Their on-screen chemistry was appraised by TVD fans, and soon after the premiere, Dobrev and Somerhalder started dating. However, the couple parted ways in 2013.

Dobrev left The Vampire Diaries in 2015, but to create the buzz for the upcoming seasons, her voice was featured in the finale episode of season 7. Her voice did confirm her return to the show, but a source close to TVD confirmed to Hollywood Life that Dobrev’s return to the series is inevitable.

“When the show ends Nina will be a part of it some way shape or form. She is 10,000 percent coming back.”

There is still no confirmation as if Dobrev and Somerhalder will be able to share the screen in the upcoming season, but the insider did reveal that the showrunner will leave it on the leads as to how they want to make their comebacks.

“The show did so much for their careers and put them on the map. For Julie Plec and the other writers and creators. They feel like they owe it to them to suck it up and send the show off any way they want to send it off.”

While it remains to be seen which character Nina Dobrev will portray in The Vampire Diaries Season 8, fans of TVD will surely be excited to see her alongside Ian Somerhalder for one last time.
