Newly Single Demi Lovato Doesn’t Put A Label On Her Sexuality

Ever since Demi Lovato has split from her boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama, she’s been fresh on the market and on the prowl. Now the former Disney star is opening up about her sexuality. Kind of.

Just days after she announced her split with the Valderrama, Lovato opened up to People about her feelings on labels and LGBT rights. Lovato revealed that she doesn’t care to be labeled when it comes to her sexuality.

“It’s something I don’t think needs to have a label: As humans, it’s just about a connection with someone.”

This isn’t the first time that the 23-year-old singer has been coy about her sexuality. After she released her hit single “Cool for the Summer” last year, fans compared it to Katy Perry’s debut smash “I Kissed a Girl.”

It even has sexually suggestive lyrics such as “Got a taste for the cherry/ I just need to take a bite” and “Don’t be scared ’cause I’m your body type,” which sparked the rumors that Demi is bisexual.

During her interview on Alan Carr’s Chatty Man, Lovato shared her thoughts on the racy lyrics. The British comedian asked her if the song was about “lesbianism,” which gave Lovato a good laugh.

“I am not confirming it and I’m definitely not denying. All of my songs are based off of personal experiences. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with experimentation at all.”

“No. The trouble is I experimented once and it stuck,” said Carr who is openly gay.

“Hey, I didn’t say that it didn’t stick either. I didn’t say that it didn’t stick,” joked Lovato.

Then, back in 2013, Orange is the New Black star Ruby Rose outed Demi as bisexual on Twitter, claiming that the two had an affair, which Demi later denied.

“I’m like the one person demi has slept with that didn’t sell naked photos of her so eff off,” Rose wrote on Twitter.

“Think ill take a few days off social media whilst @ddlovato’s friends attack me for being a ‘scorned ex-lover’ get over it! I liked the hair,” she then added.

Then Lovato responded to the Ruby Rose affair rumors in her 2015 cover story with Complex magazine.

“Humans are humans, and when you connect with somebody on a spiritual level it doesn’t matter. I don’t want people to ever look at the past or rumors or anything and try to figure me out. There’s a lot of relationships that I’ve had where nobody has even guessed it. Not everybody knows everything about me. The only thing that matters to me is that people know who I am today.”

But there’s one thing that Demi is passionate about and that’s being an advocate for the LGBT community. She made headlines when she and her tour-mate and friend Nick Jonas cancelled their Future Now concerts in North Carolina because of the discriminatory “bathroom bill.”

“It’s something I’m passionate about because I get it; I grew up in Texas. Being different in Texas or in the South in general, you can be judged. I grew up in a home where there was absolutely nothing wrong with somebody identifying as another sex or liking the same sex.”

Lovato has been focused on trying to “better” herself since her split from Valderrama. Instead of lying in a fetal position and crying all day long, she’s been hitting the gym, recording in the studio, and attending her regular Alcoholic Anonymous meetings – which she has since 2010.

“That’s pretty much my life. And I love it,” Demi recently told reporters. “My life now consists of doing things that are bettering, that are going to better myself.”

Demi calls Wilmer her “best friend” despite their shocking split. He was with her throughout most of her alcohol and drug addiction, as well as with her struggles with an eating disorder and bipolar disorder. Now she says that she has found a new support system in her good friend Nick Jonas.
