‘Injustice 2’: Gameplay Trailer Released [Video]

The first Injustice 2 gameplay trailer was released during ESL’s Mortal Kombat X Pro League Season 3 Finals tournament, and fans have gotten their first look at how the game plays.

As you can see in the trailer above, new characters will be introduced into Injustice 2. The first couple of faces that we see are Supergirl and Atrocitus, both of whom are new to the game. The combat mechanics look to be the same as what they were in the first Injustice, which should make players feel right at home when the game comes out. Supergirl makes use of swift, hard-hitting attacks that can carry the opponent from the ground to the air. There’s also the trademark heat vision attack, though it appears that Supergirl is able to walk forward in the midst of it.

It’s reported by Comicbook that Ed Boon, Creative Director of NetherRealm studios, spoke on his vision for Injustice 2.

“In Injustice 2, we are introducing new features that will change the way fans play fighting games,” Boon began. “We’re always interested in pushing the genre forward, and allowing players to customize and level-up their favorite DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains is a significant leap.”

With new additions to Injustice 2 like brand new characters, pushing the genre forward already has fans excited to see more.

Atrocitus, the second character shown in the Injustice 2 trailer, wields a red lantern ring. It differs from Green Lantern’s ring in the fact that it is fueled by rage instead of willpower. However, the form and function are essentially the same. We see Atrocitus pack quite the punch during the Injustice 2 trailer; he flattens Superman, uses a disgusting vomit projectile, and even manages to create constructs similar to those of the Lantern. Additionally, it appears that he possesses a shoulder charge move that knocks opponents back.

Characters will retain the ability to perform super moves in Injustice 2, a “finishing move” that deals a large chunk of damage to the opponent. During the trailer, we see Aquaman calling upon the help of his underwater allies to assist in crushing his foe. Superman tosses Batman around in the sky like a baseball, Atrocitus creates a bull to ram into the competition, and Batman strings his opponents up so that the Batwing can riddle their helpless bodies with bullets. If these animations are any indication to what we’ll see as time goes on, Injustice 2 may shape up to be even more chaotic and flashy than the first.

Other characters that appear in the Injustice 2 trailer are Gorilla Grodd (a highly intelligent gorilla who uses mental abilities to debilitate opponents), Batman, Aquaman, and Black Manta. Two of these, Grodd and Black Manta, are also new to the series. Their time onscreen shows unique sequences for their intros and abilities, confirming that they will be in the game. Of course, this could be nothing more than a stage transition. They appear to be making a return to the game, as multiple scenes in the Injustice 2 trailer show characters being thrown into oncoming traffic, shoved through walls, and run over by trains.

Some of the scenes in the Injustice 2 trailer reveal that there will be elements of each stage that characters can interact with to inflict further damage on their opponents. It’s likely that characters will use these objects differently, dependent on what type of character the player chooses. Whereas Superman may throw an object onto his opponent, someone more agile may simply use it for mobility purposes. This allowed variation in how players chose to approach different combat situations in the first Injustice, and one can safely assume that the same will follow suit for the sequel.

In a report by Kotaku, we see that character armor can be customized. The trailer shows this as well; Grodd transitions with multiple helmets, and Atrocitus dons different sets of armor that give him a unique appearance. As was reported earlier by The Inquisitr, players will be able to choose their character’s equipment to further individualize their style of play in Injustice 2. While no specifics have been given, it’s safe to assume that Boon and NetherRealm Studios are looking to give the game a high replay value.

Ultimately, Injustice 2 is showing promise in its early stages. Whether you’re a fan of DC or fighting games, both will blend to deliver hard hits and exhilarating sequences that will leave players reeling. The words “Every victory, every defeat defines you” flash across the screen. Could this be a hint at a possible plot in Injustice 2? Only time will tell.
