‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 8: Can Stefan Save Damon? Salvatore’s Promise To Elena [Spoilers]

The Vampire Diaries Season 7 finale ended with Damon and Enzo being affected by the mysterious creature in the Vault. Fans are not quite sure what is going to happen or how the vampires will be saved, but there are theories. Could Stefan’s motivation to save his brother have to do with the promise he made to Elena Gilbert?

Warning: Possible spoilers for The Vampire Diaries Season 8 are below. You have been warned.

On the last episode of The Vampire Diaries, Bonnie was saved, just like Damon promised. However, nobody guessed the elder Salvatore brother would be the next that would need rescuing. After hearing Elena’s voice, Damon couldn’t resist turning around. It was then that the monster somehow took over Damon’s body and mind. Later, the exact same thing happened to Enzo when he went searching for Damon inside the Vault.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, there are a number of theories on how Damon and Enzo can be saved in The Vampire Diaries. Although Stefan, Caroline, and Bonnie are all searching for the missing vampires, there is one person who truly believes the real Damon Salvatore is still inside his body. That person is Stefan, but what is the driving motivation behind that? It is true that Stefan and Damon are brothers, but TVD fans know the rocky history between the two. This is especially true considering all of the bad things Damon has done in the past.

According to Ecumenical News, Stefan’s promise to Elena in the TVD Season 7 finale might be a huge motivating factor. The website states that on the Season 7 finale of The Vampire Diaries, Stefan wrote to Elena in the journal. The younger Salvatore brother promised that he would find a way to bring Damon back. Maybe this is why Stefan is convinced Damon is still inside his body somewhere. He will have to believe it to keep going even when all hope is lost.

“After encountering the creature in the vault, it’s immediately apparent that Damon and Enzo are no longer the people that we have known and loved for seasons,” TV Guide wrote regarding TVD Season 8. “But Stefan is determined that his brother is still in there, even if there are no visible signs that point to this.”

When asked about this, Brian Young, who wrote The Vampire Diaries Season 7 finale replied,

“Season 8 is going to be rough for Damon and Enzo because bad s**t is going on,” Young explained to TV Guide. “But Stefan, always believing the best in his brother, believes Damon is still in there.”

Fans have to wonder if Damon and Enzo can really be saved. It was previously reported that Kat Graham is leaving The Vampire Diaries after Season 8. There are rumors that Ian Somerhalder plans on doing the same thing. With a small cast and core characters leaving the show, is there really any more stories to tell? Even if Nina Dobrev comes back, will the writers be able to come up with unique material? It won’t be impossible, but will be difficult.

It’s hard to say if TVD will end with Season 8 or continue to go on due to conflicting information. Fans heard that The Vampire Diaries was ending with the Season 8 finale. However, Mark Pedowitz, president of The CW network, said no decisions were being made until they see the fan reaction to the upcoming season.

What do you think of Stefan’s promise to Elena in the journal? Will the Salvatore brother be able to save Damon when The Vampire Diaries returns with Season 8? Or is it already too late for both Damon and Enzo?
