The Vampire Diaries does not return with Season 8 for a while. However, fans are anxious to discover new spoilers on the long-running vampire series. Besides Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), what other characters should come back?
Warning: Spoilers, rumors, and wild speculations for The Vampire Diaries are ahead. Proceed with caution!
There is an assumption that The Vampire Diaries will end with Season 8. However, when The CW president was asked about TVD ending, he wouldn’t give a definite answer to the question. As the Inquisitr previously reported, Mark Pedowitz commented to see how fans respond to the upcoming season.
Recently, it was announced that Nina Dobrev would definitely be returning to The Vampire Diaries for the final episode. As of right now, nobody knows if that will be in this upcoming season or not. If TVD is renewed for Season 9, then Elena might not be seen again for a while. With that being said, there is always a chance that Dobrev could decide to come back earlier.

With the news that Nina may appear in The Vampire Diaries Season 8, are there any other characters that should come back? As Hypable noted, the starring cast of TVD is getting pretty small. There is Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and his brother, Stefan (Paul Wesley). The show also features Caroline (Candice King), Bonnie (Kat Graham), Enzo (Michael Malarkey), and Alaric (Matt Davis).
When Hypable asked fans which TVD character they would like to see return, there were a lot of choices. Many actors were either killed off or left the show on their own. There are many people who could come back, especially considering the supernatural element of the series.
In the poll, Elena Gilbert received 25 percent of votes. Besides Nina Dobrev’s character, viewers also wanted to see the return of Rebekah (Claire Holt) and Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) of The Originals. TVD fans also voted for the return of Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino), Katherine Pierce (also played by Nina Dobrev), and Lexi Branson (Arielle Kebbel).

Fans may get their wish when it comes to the Mikaelson family. Executive producer Julie Plec told TV Line that she would like for The Vampire Diaries and The Originals to have more crossovers. There already have been a few, and as viewers know, the Mikaelsons were introduced on TVD. Before the season finale, Caroline mentioned to Stefan that she went to New Orleans, but couldn’t find Klaus. It was later teased that mentioning Klaus and his disappearance were a clue.
“It’s a rare luxury to have two shows in a shared universe that you could do that,” Julie Plec told TV Line. “So to not do it feels like we’re missing a really fun creative opportunity, a way to celebrate both shows. But it’s not like anyone over at the network is calling us and being like, ‘You need two crossovers this year.’ I think it’d be fun to keep finding small, organic ways to do it.”
It is not known if The Vampire Diaries Season 8 will have past characters return, if new ones will be added, or if the show will continue with its small cast. What is known is that the storyline will revolve around Damon and Enzo being taken over by the mysterious monster in the Vault. Meanwhile, Stefan, Caroline, and Bonnie will search for the two missing vampires. Hopefully, Damon and Enzo can be saved; but, with The Vampire Diaries, there is no guarantee of survival, even with a vampire’s immortal life.
Who would you like to see return in The Vampire Diaries? Will Season 8 be the last, and if so, will Nina Dobrev just come back for the season finale? Or, do you expect Elena Gilbert to be in more than one episode so all the loose ends can be tied up?
