MLB: St. Louis Cardinals Begin Series With 6-0 Win Over Milwaukee Brewers

Carlos Martinez finally turned things around on Monday, earning his first win for the St. Louis Cardinals in the month of May as they defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 6-0. Martinez pitched eight scoreless innings for the Cardinals, ensuring that the Brewers will remain in fourth place in the National League Central Division at the end of this series.

A busy afternoon for Memorial Day, the Chicago Cubs were at home beating the Los Angeles Dodgers, while the Cincinnati Reds won a high-scoring game against the Colorado Rockies. The Pittsburgh Pirates played in Miami on Monday night, meaning every team in the NL Central with St. Louis and Milwaukee were in action on May 30.

The series between the STL Cards and the Milwaukee Brewers continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday, as the teams battle for third place in their division.

Cardinals hitting stats

Matt Holiday went 3-for-4 on Monday against the Brewers, including the final run of the game when he hit a single-run homer in the Top of the 7th. He finished the game with 3 RBIs. Matt Carpenter went 4-for-5, reaching home three times on Monday. Aledmys Diaz went 2-for-5, as he continues to lead the team in batting average (.326).

As a team, the St. Louis Cardinals are top 5 in the MLB when it comes to hits, on-base percentage, home runs, and triples. They currently lead the National League in OPS, slugging percentage, RBIs, runs, and doubles, with only the Boston Red Sox beating them in any of those categories. The Cards remain in the MLB’s Top 10 for batting average and walks.

Trevor Rosenthal struck out three and walked one in the Bottom of the 9th to close out the victory for the Cardinals. Each St. Louis pitcher gave up a single walk on Monday and combined for a total of 11 strike outs. Martinez, now 5-5 on the season, gave up just five hits in his shut-out performance.

Mike Leake (3-4, 3.90 ERA) is set to pitch the second game against the Brewers, as Milwaukee will start Wily Peralta (3-5, 6.62 ERA). Jaime Garcia (4-4, 3.47 ERA) is scheduled to start on Wednesday afternoon.
