Chrissy Teigen And John Legend Strike Back Following Mom-Shaming Incident

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend may be new parents, but it would be a mistake to think the couple took the plunge into parenthood blindly. Both Chrissy and John had plenty of time to familiarize themselves with the experiences of other parents while they struggled to conceive. As Teigen says, they were well aware of the pitfalls that so often plague new mothers and fathers. Among those pitfalls is the unfortunate act of mom-shaming.

Chrissy Teigen Opens Up About Her First Mom-Shaming Experience

New mom Chrissy says she was familiar with the concept of mom shaming from reading blogs written by other new mothers, but she never expected to experience it firsthand, and certainly not so soon after welcoming her new bundle of joy into the family. Teigen says she was shocked that she was shamed over something as trivial as going out to dinner with husband John Legend, especially when the couple was away from their baby for no more than an hour.

Luna Simone Stephens had been born on April 14, and just over a week later, Teigen and John were photographed having dinner together, stirring up the mom-shaming that Chrissy now says was a big shock.

“We needed a break. We needed to enjoy each other’s company and be out,” Ms. Teigen said in response to a wave of online criticism over the couple’s decision to leave Luna at home with a nanny.

Teigen feels that taking time for themselves and getting away for something as brief as a dinner date can only help to make the whole family more relaxed. She says that keeping each other happy will make a happy baby as well.

While at home, Teigen says that Legend is turning out to be a great father to Luna, helping out with feedings and diaper duty.

“I don’t even want to say because everyone already thinks John is so perfect, so I love to kind of twist it and make sure people know that nobody is perfect, but he’s been really great,” Teigen said.

JohnLegend Comes To Chrissy’s Defense Against Mom-Shamers

Chrissy Teigen wasn’t left to the wolves, when the online community attempted to shame her and make her feel guilty for enjoying a quiet dinner with her husband. John Legend was swift in his defending response of the dinner date.

“If you’re saying she’s a terrible parent for leaving the child at home — and she’s not, obviously — but if you’re going to say it to her, then say it to me, too,” Legend says.

Even after the fact, John says he still fails to see why anyone would have a problem with the night out, especially if both he and Teigen felt it was something necessary for everyone’s well-being. He points out that the idea of a child-free dinner was actually his suggestion to begin with, so once again, the internet has reacted to something without knowing all of the facts.

“You know, every once in a while, you have to take care of yourselves as a couple. We’ve got Chrissy’s mom at home. We’ve got a great baby nurse. We’ve got all kinds of help — and we know Luna’s in good hands when we do have a chance to leave the house.”

Legend says that their night out shouldn’t be seen as two young parents buckling under the stress of having a newborn in the house. Quite to the contrary, John and Chrissy both say they are loving their new roles as mom and dad, especially after having had so much difficulty in conceiving in the first place. Legend admits that he and Teigen are having to adjust to less sleep and rearranged daily schedules, but he says they’re enjoying the experience.

Luna’s proud father also hints that she may be showing interests in music and singing already.

“She’s making a lot of noise, but I wouldn’t call it singing yet,” Legend laughed. “She’s got a strong voice, I will say that much!”
