‘Game Of Thrones’ Made A Huge Change To Daenerys, Fans Are Outraged

HBO’s Game of Thrones has diverged from the book series on a number of occasions, but there was one major change featured in last night’s episode which has some fans up in arms. Spoiler alert if you haven’t read the books or watched last night’s episode, “Book of The Stranger.”

At the end of last night’s episode of Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen took it upon herself to burn down the temple of Vaes Dothrak – with herself and the ruling Khals locked inside. Daenerys, who styles herself “the Unburnt” steps out of the burning building before the amassed Dothraki, unscathed and totally naked. The assembled Dothraki hordes all bow to her, awed as the flames lick at her but don’t appear to harm her.

It’s a thrilling scene, one which Daenerys herself, Emilia Clarke, said was “thrilling” to shoot – one of just a few scenes in each season of Game of Thrones in which Daenerys gets to do something spectacular. Fans of the book series however, have been taking issue with last night’s big reveal.

In part because author George R. R. Martin once remarked that Daenerys isn’t fire-proof. Even though she emerged from Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre unscathed, Martin stated that the event was just a one-time thing – the result of blood magic.

Last night Game of Thrones fans took to social media to vent their frustration, reports Tech Insider. Many commented that Daenerys wasn’t supposed to be “fire proof” and last night’s big climax was too big a departure from the source material. Fans had some angry words for the writers, but otherwise claimed the episode was one of the best so far.

Still, it’s worth pointing out that Daenerys being fireproof in last night’s climactic scene has been foreshadowed in previous seasons. In season one of Game of Thrones, Daenerys illustrated her fire and heat resistance early on, well before the dragons were born in Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre. She handled her dragon eggs when they were scalding hot, and she was shown enduring painfully hot baths. Last night’s fiery climax might have been a departure from the books, but it’s certainly not the only one the show has made so far, and according to actress Emilia Clarke, the scene was a big moment for Daenerys in the context of the Game of Thrones TV series.

“It’s so exciting, very tingly-making. Every season I get at least one spine-chilling moment. I just stand up and I go, ‘I’m hearing what you’re all saying, but funny thing, I’m going to kill you all. I forgot that I have an ace in my back pocket and now I win,'” said Emilia Clarke speaking with Entertainment Weekly.

Game of Thrones‘ season six has been filled with big reveals and big moments, shocking fans of the books and the TV show alike, and despite some outrage over last night’s major departure from the books, the scene was pivotal for Daenerys. Last season, we saw Daenerys hamstrung by rebellion, bureaucracy, and political infighting, and early this season we saw her captured and subjugated, dragged against her will back to Vaes Dothrak. But last night, we saw a return to form for Daenerys – she wasn’t rescued by the two gallant warriors who tracked her down, nor by a big dragon swooping out of the sky. No, last night Daenerys rescued herself, and in the process secured powerful new allies.

“She realizes that this is the missing piece, the Dothraki are the missing piece of her crew – she’s seemingly indestructible having Dothraki on her side,” said actress Emilia Clarke.
