Katherine Heigl Heads Back To TV With CBS Legal Drama ‘Doubt’

Katherine Heigl is headed back to the small screen. Heigl’s new legal drama, Doubt, has been given a series order by CBS, according to TV Line. Katherine will star as Sadie Ellis, a successful defense lawyer at a boutique firm who falls for a client accused of a brutal crime.

If you think the premise of Doubt sounds familiar, that’s because the new Katherine Heigl drama isn’t so new. The show was redeveloped after it failed to get a pickup last fall. Katherine replaced KaDee Strickland in the Doubt pilot and she will be joined by Steven Pasquale, Laverne Cox, Dulé Hill, Dreama Walker, Elliott Gould, and Kobi Libii in the series. Doubt reunites Katherine Heigl with former Grey’s Anatomy writer-producers Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, who have written and will executive-produce Doubt.

Katherine Heigl has been all over the network TV map. While she shot to fame after starring as Izzie on Grey’s Anatomy, Heigl moved on to NBC’s short-lived political drama State of Affairs. Now she’ll head to CBS for Doubt.

Katherine Heigl made headlines in 20o8 after she criticized Grey’s Anatomy writers for not giving her material worthy of an Emmy Award just one year after she won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a drama series. After withdrawing her name from the Emmy nomination process, Katherine later admitted to TV Guide that she didn’t conduct herself in the best way when she called out the writers of the ABC medical drama.

“Look, there are gracious, classy ways of doing what I did. Then the not-so-gracious and not-so-classy ways.” Katherine said. “I fell into the latter at that point in my life. I spent the next couple of years wobbling. If people keep saying something about you, you wonder if they’re right and you’re wrong. It’s uncomfortable to think, ‘My God, am I really this sh*tty person?’ But it wasn’t the end of the world either. There’s a lot worse I could have done. I’m always going to fight for the material to be great.”

After Katherine Heigl left Grey’s in 2010, she focused on films and family, but when she attempted a TV return it was via a highly scrutinized ZZZquil commercial. When NBC came knocking with State of Affairs, Heigl told TV Guide she was tired of having to defend her career choices.

“I find it interesting that people even ask if TV is a demotion,” Heigl said. “How can you say that and watch something like Matthew McConaughey in True Detective or Kevin Spacey in House of Cards?”

Katherine Heigl was still in high school when she landed her first leading role came in the1994 Gerard Depardieu movie My Father the Hero. Five years later, she played alien-human hybrid Isabel Evans on the cult sci-fi cult Roswell. But Heigl’s breakout role came in 2005 when she played hospital intern Izzie Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy.

Unfortunately, Katherine’s time on Grey’s was marred by the Emmy controversy and her exit amid rumors that she was “difficult” to work with. When Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes talked about the close-knit cast on her subsequent ABC series How to Get Away With Murder, she told The Hollywood Reporter that there was no Heigl drama on the set of her new show.

“There are no Heigls in this situation,” Rhimes said. ” I don’t put up with bullsh*t or nasty people. I don’t have time for it.”

While she has long moved on, Katherine Heigl has remorse for the Grey’s drama. Katherine recently told radio host Howard Stern that the media scrutiny led her to therapy because she was struggling so such in the aftermath of her exit from the show. Katherine also said after the Grey’s fallout she became afraid to open her mouth so as not to offend anyone.

“It was a weird time,” Heigl told Stern. “I remember doing this little independent movie and just being afraid to say anything about anything. I remember wearing shoes a size too small because I was afraid to tell wardrobe that they weren’t big enough because I didn’t want to be difficult.”
