Prince’s Ex-Wife Mayte Garcia Opens Up About The Tragic Loss Of Their Son

Mayte Garcia took the podium at the Single Moms Planet’s Single Mom’s Awards in Los Angeles on Friday. Still reeling from the death of her ex-husband Prince, Mayte talked about the tragic loss of their son 20 years ago when their son died just one week after being born.

According to Access Hollywood, Mayte spoke at the award show for single mothers. She recounted her pregnancy with Prince’s only son, and she talked about the heartbreaking loss of the child they called Boy Gregory just one week after he was born. It was a second pregnancy that Mayte lost in a horrific miscarriage shortly after that she credits with ending her marriage to the iconic singer.

“Like most women, I always dreamt of becoming a mother,” she said. “Unfortunately, I got pregnant, lost the baby months later and then lost my marriage.”

“It just wasn’t my time yet…. After that, I was broken. And I kinda lost hope. I basically gave up my dream of becoming a mom.”

Years after losing her only son and her marriage to Prince, Mayte Garcia decided to head to reality TV for a stint on Hollywood Exes. It was on that show where Mayte started to speak about her son and her failed marriage to Prince. Garcia admitted that it was hard for her to open up about her painful history prior to going on the show.

“For years my marriage to Prince was mine,” Mayte said. “The idea of exposing myself to the world… was terrifying.”

It turns out that her time on Hollywood Exes actually helped Mayte Garcia to heal both from her failed marriage to Prince and from losing her son and miscarrying another.

“I will never regret being a part of it because the show served as therapy for me.”

Even though they haven’t been together in nearly two decades, Mayte admitted that the death of Prince has been very hard on her.

“As you know, Prince is no longer with us,” Garcia said. “It is extremely difficult for me, and that is why I have chosen not to discuss it.”

Then Mayte Garcia went on to speak about why she was at the Single Moms Planet’s Single Mom’s Awards to speak of her experience. When she began to open up and to talk about the hurt of losing her son Boy Gregory and the devastation that led to the end of her marriage to Prince, this also led to a miracle for Mayte. It was because of her openness that Garcia was contacted via Twitter by a woman who wanted her to adopt her daughter and raise the girl as her own.

“I didn’t know what to believe or feel, but I took the offer as a sign that the universe, the mother, father, God wanted to give me a second chance at my dream of becoming a mother…. I fell in love with that 8-month-old baby girl and there was another sign: We share the same birthday.”

Mayte’s journey to adopt did play out on Hollywood Exes. Fans were able to see the trials she faced when it came to convincing her mother that adoption was a great idea for her, and it also showed the huge amount of support that she had from the other women on the show.

Mayte Garcia calls the adoption of her daughter her “second chance” at becoming a mother, something she always wanted to do.

“I fell in love… with that baby girl,” Mayte said. “Five years later, she is my greatest gift.”
