‘Bates Motel’ Recap: Norman Had An Ax, Freddie Wrote The Script

This week’s episode of Bates Motel certainly did not disappoint. Unfortunately, Norman’s homecoming was not the happy occasion everyone envisioned it would be. Saying things were tense in the Bates/Romero household is an understatement.

In the opening scene, Norma woke up shivering. After checking on Norman, she discovered the furnace wasn’t working. What was Norman’s immediate solution to the problem? Big surprise. He suggested they sleep in the same bed in an effort to stay warm, reported Entertainment Weekly.

If you’re wondering where Norma’s new husband was during all of this, he agreed to move out until she had the nerve to tell Norman that her marriage was more than just a matter of convenience. Romero wasn’t too pleased to hear that she snuck into the bathroom to answer his call.

Norma convinced Norman to go talk to Sheriff Romero to thank him for all of his help. He did what his mother asked. However, he also told Alex he planned on staying on at the Bates Motel and getting a second job to pay for his own insurance. So, there really was no reason for the two of them to stay married. When Alex told him things had changed, Norman replied insistently.

“Certain things can never change. Things that you know nothing about and never, ever will.”

While shopping for space heaters, Norma ran into Dylan. She invited him and Emma to go Christmas tree shopping with her and Norman later that night. She also paid a visit to Alex, promising him she would tell Norman about them very soon.

When Dylan and Emma arrived, things were awkward. But, at the same time, Norman seemed genuinely happy for the new couple. Dylan, still wary about the mental state of his brother, told Emma he was glad to be distancing himself from his family and Bates Motel.

During their tree buying trip, Norma and Norman argued about Romero. Norma finally confessed her love for the good sheriff, adding that he felt the same way. Norman was less than pleased. He proceeded to throw up.

Because there was still no heat in the house, Norma and Norman slept in separate rooms at the Bates Motel that night. While looking out the window, Norman saw the sheriff pull up and go into his mother’s room.

In true Psycho fashion, Norman snuck into the vacant room next door, removed a large picture from the wall, and carved a peephole between the rooms. He then watched in horror as the Romeros got intimate.

Fast forward to the next evening. It was dinnertime. Norman, Norma, and Alex were sitting around the table. Norman and Alex began to argue. Norma intervened, which upset Norman even more. He ran outside and started chopping wood. Alex followed. Norman took a couple of swings at him and then ran back inside, going up to his room. Alex came back in and informed his wife that he was moving back in, in the morning. Let’s face it, who better to protect the owner of Bates Motel?

As reported by The Inquisitr, last week Rebecca told Alex she was leaving White Pine Bay to care for her ailing mother. Of course, she planned to take her share of Bob Paris’s dirty money with her. Just inches from making a clean getaway, poor Rebecca was detained by DEA agents. What a surprise! There is good news, however. They made her an offer she couldn’t refuse.

According to Yahoo TV, Freddie Highmore wrote this particular episode of Bates Motel. His desire stemmed from the fact the cast and crew spent several months filming in Vancouver.

“You get so involved with the character and so invested in the story as a whole. It seemed odd to me to leave all of that behind and sort of go home and have nothing to do with it… I wanted to be involved in that wider process.”
