Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’ Mystery — The Inside Story About Jay-Z, Rachel Roy, Damon Dash, And That Infamous Elevator Fight

Beyoncé surprised fans with the release of her newest album, Lemonade. While fans were grateful for the unexpected release, they were even more shocked by Beyoncé’s references to her marital problems. Based on some of the lyrics, Beyoncé’s beef centered on Jay Z’s relationship with Damon Dash’s ex-wife, Rachel Roy. What’s the true story behind Beyoncé’s troubled marriage and that infamous elevator fight with his sister-in-law Solange Knowles?

According to the Daily Beast, Beyoncé made several references to her marriage. For starters, the song “Anger” includes Beyoncé singing: “If you try this s**t again, you’re gon’ lose your wife.” Later, during “Apathy,” she sings: “He better call Becky with the good hair.”

Naturally, fans started to wonder who Beyoncé was referring to, and who had tried to break up her marriage with Jay-Z. Unfortunately, the Washington Post is reporting that some fans accidentally pointed their rage towards Rachael Ray, the famous chef, while they meant to target Roy.

In fact, fans swarmed Ray’s Twitter account with negative messages. While some fans vowed to never watch her cooking show again, others called her out for trying to break up Beyoncé’s marriage. For her part, Ray has not officially commented on the misdirected anger, though an insider did reveal that she is not happy about the negative messages on social media.

However, some fans did express their disapproval on Roy’s social media accounts. In fact, shortly after the album dropped online, Roy posted a message on Instagram that hit back at Beyoncé’s lyrics. “Good hair don’t care, but we will take good lighting, for selfies, or self-truths, always. live in the light #nodramaqueens,” Roy wrote in a message that has since been deleted.

Of course, after fans reacted negatively to Roy’s post, she took to Twitter with a message for Beyoncé’s loyal fans – the Beehive. “I respect love, marriages, families and strength. What shouldn’t be tolerated by anyone, no matter what, is bullying, of any kind,” Roy stated.

Why did Beyoncé choose to take a stab at Roy and unveil her marital problems on the album? Apparently, the beef between the two women started after Beyoncé’s sister, Solange, accused Jay-Z of getting a little too close with Roy, who also happened to be the former wife of his ex-business partner, Damon Dash.

After the accusations, Solange famously had a physical confrontation with Jay-Z in an elevator in 2014. While Beyoncé quietly watched in the background, Solange fought with Jay-Z over his relationship with Roy.

“Solange was defending Beyoncé in the elevator because Solange finds Jay’s friendship with Rachel to be WAY too close for comfort and it makes Solange very uncomfortable,” an insider explained to Hollywood Life. “Beyoncé also confronted Rachel and said, ‘Don’t talk to my sister like that,’ after [Rachel] confronted Solange.”

Based on the lyrics, it appears as though there was some truth behind the cheating accusations between Jay-Z and Roy. Apparently, Beyoncé gave Jay-Z a second chance, though it doesn’t sound as though she’s forgiven Roy’s part in the matter.

Meanwhile, according to Rolling Stone, fans have reacted well to Beyoncé’s latest album. Despite sounding a lot like her previous records, Lemonade offers a nice blend of beats and emotions to satisfy any fan. Given the controversy surrounding the album, Beyoncé is not going to have trouble selling her latest offering.

In addition to the conflict between Beyoncé and Roy, the album also explores topics of pain, race, womanhood, and love. Lemonade also fits nicely into Beyoncé’s current body of work, complete with its mixture of R&B, trap, country and melodic piano riffs.

Fans can listen to Beyoncé’s newest work on Jay-Z’s online music service, Tidal, and it can be purchased on iTunes. HBO subscribers can also watch Queen B’s hour-long Lemonade visual album OnDemand.
