Fans Of ‘Marriage Contract’ Prepare For The Worst As K-Drama Heads Towards Its Finale

After more than a decade, an original contract marriage K-drama is actually doing well that its ratings are passing the 20 percent viewership rating threshold since Princess Hours, also known as Goong. The contract marriage K-drama, by happenstance titled Marriage Contract, started out strong with its debut episode on March 5 with 18 percent viewership rating average and steadily increased to 21 percent viewership rating average by the airing of the 14th episode on April 17.

To be fair, Marriage Contract‘s ratings are well-deserved because the K-drama’s writing, direction, and acting are generally superb. Ergo, a decent fan base has developed. Now, Marriage Contract will come to an end this weekend as the penultimate episode and finale airs. Not only that, fans are preparing for the worst to happen as their K-drama comes to a close.

For those who do not know what the K-drama Marriage Contract is, it is, as mentioned earlier, a contract marriage series that airs on the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC). It is about Kang Hye Soo (Uee), a single mother struggling to raise her daughter and pay off her late husband’s tantamount debts. She ends up working as a chef at a restaurant owned by Han Ji Hoon (Lee Seo Jin) who is the son of a rich family. Ji Hoon finds himself in dire need of finding a donor for his mother who needs a liver transplant. Hye Soo, after finding out she has an inoperable brain tumor, agrees to give a portion of her liver to Ji Hoon’s mother in exchange for enough money to provide for her daughter until she reaches adulthood.

Despite the fact the contract marriage between Kang Hye Soo and Han Ji Hoon is supposed to be strictly professional, especially with the fact it is illegal, Hye Soo and Ji Hoon’s interactions with each other become more intimate to the point they develop feelings for each other. Eventually, they both fall in love which comes full circle by the end of the 14th episode which is attached below for viewing.

Just by how the 14th episode ended, it is enough for K-drama fans to think of it as the series’ ending. However, Marriage Contract is scheduled to air 16 episodes. Ergo, fans are preparing for the worst to happen because showing a scene that is so happy, so emotional as they did at the end of the 14th episode when it is not the end is usually the “calm before the storm.”

At this point on, it must be stressed there will be some plot spoilers. As mentioned earlier, fans are preparing for the worst, and it is believed it will be Kang Hye Soo’s death. Since the beginning of the K-drama, Hye Soo’s inoperable brain tumor has foreshadowed the possibility of disaster striking. The fact Hye Soo waited too long to start treatment, the treatment failing to combat the growth of the tumor, and even the top American neurologist Ji Hoon confided in to save Hye Soo supposedly claiming there is little that can be done, have all been accounted to this point. It is more than likely that Kang Hye Soo dies by the end of the series, leaving her daughter in the care of Han Ji Hoon.

It is also possible that Han Ji Hoon’s mother, Oh Mi Ran, dies instead of Kang Hye Soo. Just because Mi Ran found a donor through her brother and had a successful liver transplant does not mean there might be complications afterwards. It is a possibility, but Hye Soo’s situation is far more dire.

The only way fans of Marriage Contract will find out if their debilitating fears do prove true or not is to watch the series’ penultimate episode and finale on Saturday and Sunday, April 23 and 24, on the MBC. For those who do not have access to Korean channels, Marriage Contract can be viewed for free (with ads) on both DramaFever and Viki pending region.
