Mary Sarah Covers Carrie Underwood’s ‘So Small’ And Lands ‘The Voice’ Judges Some New Boots

The Voice contestant Mary Sarah took on a more contemporary song than usual on Monday night’s episode. The Nashville-based country artist impressed the judges with her cover of Carrie Underwood’s “So Small.”

In a clip shown before her performance, Mary Sarah told coach Blake Shelton she chose “So Small” because it’s inspirational and talks about conquering problems. She related the song to her brother, who was born prematurely, weighing only one-and-a-half pounds.

Her brother developed diabetes, which Mary Sarah said was “not easy.” She revealed that as a result of her brother’s experience, she does a lot of work with preemie babies and their families.

During rehearsal, Mary Sarah told Shelton she wanted to stay true to the song yet blend in her signature traditional sound. Blake agreed, saying she has to show America she is capable of a range of country songs. He said Mary Sarah has that ability and can do a Patsy Cline song just as well as she can do a more contemporary Carrie Underwood song.

Blake Shelton even offered Mary Sarah some fashion advice for her performance. He told her he imagined her standing in “big, pretty gown.” Mary Sarah followed his advice, showing up in a long, shimmering pink skirt with a sleeveless top.

All four judges praised Mary Sarah’s performance. Christina Aguilera told her she looked “so pretty,” to which Mary Sarah replied that she felt like a “princess.” Aguilera went on to say while she wasn’t very familiar with the song, it was” beautiful,” and she did a “great job” with it.

Coach Pharrell Williams asked Mary Sarah if when she was working at Boot Barn back at home, she ever imagined she would be standing on The Voice stage as a Top 12 contestant. Mary Sarah responded by saying she had “big dreams.”

Adam Levine joked that the owner of Boot Barn must be ecstatic with all the talk about the Western wear store. Blake chimed in that Boot Barn should be sending the judges some free boots in return. Adam directed the conversation back to Mary Sarah, saying they had viewed her as a “traditional” country singer. He commended her for getting a contemporary song under her belt and for making it her own unique version.

Mary Sarah’s coach, Blake Shelton, told her he knew she did her job because he got “completely wrapped up in the lyrics of that song.” He explained he wasn’t sure if he had ever paid attention to what “So Small” is about, but said Mary Sarah “really delivered the message” to him last night. Shelton also pointed out that Mary Sarah found a way to successfully walk the “fine line” between traditional and contemporary country.

Blake Shelton ended his critique by asking if Boot Barn would be sending a package after the show. Mary Sarah laughingly replied, “I think so if they see this.”

They saw. The company tweeted in excitement over having The Voice judges talk about its wares. It sounds like Blake, Adam, Pharrell, Christina, and Carson will all be sporting a new pair of boots soon. Boot Barn tweeted to Carson Daly saying to send them all their sizes and they would gladly get a package sent out.

Mary Sarah earned her spot on The Voice with her “Where the Boys Are” blind audition performance. Her old school sound coaxed all four judges to turn their chairs. Mary Sarah chose Team Blake, where she has remained.

The young country singer also had the honor of singing “Where the Boys Are” for The Oak Ridge Boys. The country legends took notice of her talent when she was just a teenager singing in Texas. They invited her to perform on their stage to a sold out crowd.

Mary Sarah later recorded a duet album with The Oak Ridge Boys, along with Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and more, according to her Voice bio. The album, Bridges, was released last year.
