‘Travelers’ To Premiere On Netflix Later This Year As Filming Begins In Vancouver

Netflix has picked up Erick McCormack’s sci-fi time-travelling TV show Travelers. The internet video streaming network will air Travelers across the world except in Canada where Showcase, its co-producer and distribution partner, will have exclusive rights.

The Travelers TV show is based on events that take place hundreds of years from the present day when the world is on the verge of an apocalypse. Technological advances lead to the discovery of the means to send consciousness back in time to the people living in the 21st century.

The travelers, which are basically the consciousnesses of various people from the future, incarnate in the lives of random people living in the present time (the 21st century). These people then team up to execute missions in a bid to save humanity from a catastrophic future.

Travelers cast is drawn from a team of people who seem unrelated in any way based on their present lives. Erick McCormack (Will & Grace, Perception) plays the role of Grant MacLaren, an FBI Special Agent who is also the team’s leader. MacKenzie Porter (Hell on Wheels) plays the role of Marcy, a young, intellectually disabled woman in the care of her social worker, David, played by Stargate Universe star Patrick Gilmore.

On the other hand, Jared Paul Abrahamson plays the role of Trevor, a high school football quarterback while Carly, played by Nesta Marlee Cooper, is a single mom in an abusive relationship. Reilly Dolman also joins the cast as Philip, who is a college student and heroin addict and also forms part of the Travelers team. Arnold Pinnock (The Listener) and Ian Tracey (Continuum, Bates Motel) also form part of the cast.

The first season of Travelers will contain 12 episodes, with the pilot episode being directed by Nick Hurran (Doctor Who, Sherlock). On the other hand, Andy Mikita (Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis), Helen Shaver (Private Practice, The Unit, Orphan Black), Martin Wood (Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis), Will Waring (Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis), and Amanda Tapping (Stargate SG-1, Sanctuary) are expected to direct subsequent episodes as the series’ premiere season develops.

According to Deadline, filming and production of the pilot episode have already started in Vancouver, Canada, and the premiere date is expected to be sometime later this year. Erick McCormack is certainly looking forward to working with old friend and the creator of Travelers Brad Wright.

When asked about the upcoming Netflix Original series, Wright said that he was happy to be one of the “very rich and complicated characters” created by Wright in what he termed as a “fantastic, complex story.” Wright was equally impressed with the pool of talent and experience he managed to bring to the show.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Showcase and Netflix and are so proud that ‘Travelers’ was originally developed at the CFC Prime Time TV Program with Canadian writers,” said Brad Wright, the series writer and creator. “We’re excited to work with this amazing cast led by Eric McCormack. It’s all a dream come true for a Scarborough boy like me.”

Travelers will premiere at a time when many other time-travelling shows will be launching. NBC’s Time alongside ABC’s Time after Time are expected to be the main rivals to Netflix and Showcase’s Travelers given their orientation. Fox’s comedy Making History and Comedy Central’s Time Travelling Bong are also in contention to launch their pilots in the near future.

Travelers is produced by Peacock Alley Entertainment Inc. in association with Netflix and Showcase. Travelers will be composed of predominantly Canadian actors, and most of the directors are also from the North American country.
