Move Over, Kendall And Kylie: Mary-Kate And Ashley Olsen Post Their First Selfie

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen may find themselves in heavy competition with Kendall and Kylie Jenner. The famous twin sisters have not officially joined social media, but they have taken some small steps by posting their first-ever public selfie.

The former child stars, 29, took to Sephora’s Instagram account on Wednesday, April 13, to give their fans a glimpse into the design process for their fashion line, Elizabeth & James, as well as their accompanying fragrances, Nirvana White and Nirvana Black.

The always stylish sisters also posted a black-and-white photo of themselves wearing dark sunglasses, messy blonde wavy hair, and their signature black clothing.

“First public selfie ever @ElizandJames #SephoraTakeOver,” the twins wrote in the caption.

Just a few days prior, the boutique posted a glamorous black-and-white photo of the Olsen twins with the announcement: “It’s happening. Ashley and Mary-Kate are joining Instagram…..for one day.”

That’s not all they shared, though. Aside from their historical selfie, Mary-Kate and Ashley also took over the account to share photos from their “beauty goals” vision board along with their salads, handbag material samples, and a pair of wine bottles that feature the name of their respective fragrances.

With the increasing popularity of social media and photo-sharing apps, the starlets have decided not to have any type of social media presence. Fans don’t even get to see Mary-Kate and Ashley walk down the streets of New York with a Starbucks cups in their hands like they did in the mid-2000s. Mary-Kate told Vogue in 2011 the reason why they chose not to use social media.

“We’ve spent our whole lives trying to not let people have that accessibility, so it would go against everything we’ve done in our lives to not be in the public.”

“[Twitter] gives me anxiety,” Ashley admitted.

Then, in a 2009 interview with The New York Times, they revealed that they would rather have their designs do the talking for them. It seems to work, since they make a combined $300 million, according to E! Online.

That hasn’t stopped the young designers from popping up on other people’s social media accounts. Both Mary-Kate and Ashley have popped up on their former Full House cast’s social media accounts, including Bob Saget’s Instagram over the holidays.

When the twins turned 29 last summer, they threw an outdoor obstacle course celebration in the Hamptons. During their Olympics-themed party, they had their guests wear “Team Mary-Kate” and “Team Ashley” t-shirts as they competed in games, such as relay races, obstacle courses, and dunk tanks.

The lucky guests took to Instagram to show photos and videos of the fun games. But it was Team Ashley who celebrated their win with sparklers.

“Happy birthday my beautiful MK,” birthday guest Jared Seligman wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of himself with Mary-Kate. “You’re always a winner in my book…Except today. #olsenolympics #werenumber1”

The twins’ friend Yale Breslin also shared a photo on Instagram, along with the caption, “Happy Birthday #TeamMK #OlsenOlympics”

Strangely enough, both of the posts were removed. But this was a relatively tame birthday party compared to the one they had in 2007. At a friend’s wild 21st birthday party, Mary-Kate was photographed biting the leg of a stripper for reasons unknown.

Then, in 2008, a hacker stole candids from Photobucket and dug up some photos of Mary-Kate partying with some friends dressed in plaid flannel shirts, including Nicole Richie and her former boyfriend Joel Madden. The group appears to partying inside a mansion where they’re photographed drinking, smoking cigarettes, playing games, and doing something peculiar on the wooden floor.
