Blake Shelton’s ‘Savior’s Shadow’ Gets Overwhelming Response, Comes On Tail Feathers Of Upbeat ‘Friends’ Release
Blake Shelton released the second single from his upcoming, deeply personal album If I’m Honest. “Savior’s Shadow” has gotten an overwhelming response, according to Shelton’s recent Twitter posts. “Can’t believe the response to Savior’s Shadow… Thank y’all,” he told followers on Friday.

The faith-based song, which hit Christian radio over the weekend, was written by Blake Shelton, Jessi Alexander, and Jon Randall. Alexander told Taste of Country that Shelton started the “beautiful and moving” song and asked the husband and wife team to help him finish it.
“He started an incredible song, a gospel song, and asked me and JR to help him finish. It’s beautiful and moving and I can’t wait for him to tell the story. It’s almost his ‘Why Me Lord’ — it’s very deep to him and to us. It came deep from Blake’s soul and we were just glad we got to kind of help him birth it.”
Blake Shelton revealed in a press release that “Savior’s Shadow” came to him in a dream, shortly after his painful divorce from country singer Miranda Lambert.
“At a very dark time in my life last year I dreamed the first verse of this song. I woke up and immediately wrote it down. Now, looking back, I know it was God’s way of telling me that he’s here and things are gonna be OK.”
In all the years I've been doing this I've never experienced this kind of reaction from a song. So proud. https://t.co/7jOxkTkGPG

As support for “Savior’s Shadow” poured in, Blake Shelton tweeted that he has “never experienced this kind of reaction from a song,” and that he is “so proud.” The following day, Shelton was still amazed at the continued positive response to the song. He told fans he is “so grateful.”

Blake Shelton’s heartfelt “Savior’s Shadow” comes on the heels — or tail feathers — of a more light-hearted, upbeat song that focuses on some of his newest feathered friends. Shelton introduced his “Friends” in the music video from the upcoming Angry Birds Movie soundtrack last week. Shelton will lend his famous voice to a “hillbilly pig” in the movie, according to Rolling Stone Country.

Both singles are a sharp contrast to the first release from Blake Shelton’s highly anticipated new album — his first since his divorce from Miranda Lambert. “Came Here to Forget” is about “a couple’s intimate encounter at a bar,” where each is trying to bury the pain of a recent breakup. Obviously, many connect the song to his divorce from Lambert and newfound love with Gwen Stefani.
Blake Shelton promised fans will get more glimpses into his personal life with If I’m Honest. The Voice judge revealed he did more writing for this one album than he’s done in the last 15 years. Shelton told ET his new music was fueled by the emotional ups and downs he has experienced over the last year.
“It is all on the record. I can put my life experience, whether it’s a divorce or my new girlfriend, whatever those experiences are, whatever things that are happening in my life, I have an outlet for them. I have music.”
Blake Shelton’s If I’m Honest is set for a May 20 release. The Angry Birds Movie will premiere May 20, as well.
