NBC throws Google TV ads a life line

Google and NBC Universal have signed a deal that will see Google sell advertisements on some of NBC’s cable channels including MSNBC, Oxygen and the Sci Fi network.

NBC said that the deal was an attempt to reach advertisers who currently advertise online using Adwords but don’t advertise on television. For Google, it’s a shot in the arm for its struggling TV advertising division, that started with a world of good intentions, but suffered from a serious lack of inventory as established players weren’t willing to share their diminishing spoils.

From a Google watching you perspective, the deal comes with a data gathering element. Google already has a deal in place with Dish, so as viewers consumer Google TV ads, Google will also be able to track which ads are more popular, allowing advertisers to refine their pitch.
