Kevin Hart And The Rock Made Their MTV Awards Outrageous As Possible

Tonight’s MTV Movie Awards were billed as the ‘wildest’ awards show ever, and Kevin Hart’s opening, which also featured Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, was by far the most epic and hilarious spectacle of the already very zany and action-packed event. In planning the event, Hart had revealed to reporters why he felt the over-the-top approach was needed for his bit with The Rock, and is reasoning embodies the spirits of the awards. The final result, though, was even more than anyone saw coming.

Essentially, Kevin Hart said before the show, he and his co-host, The Rock, understood in planning their opener that the MTV awards shows are not formal, straight-laced events like The Oscars or The Golden Globes, and they thought their opening act should prioritize the goal of loosening everyone up – including both themselves and the audience – by being as raucous and off-the-wall as possible.

“When you see award shows, sometimes people don’t come to have a good time. People come to sit up straight and make sure their posture’s perfect for the cameras,” Hart pointed out from the set at Warner Bros. Studios.

“The MTV Movie Awards is a looser environment. They have a good time. Things happen. Moments people talk about for years.”

“When you look at some of the biggest moments in entertainment, a lot of the craziest, wildest ones happened at the MTV Movie Awards.”

Hart speaks the truth, as many of the most iconic moments in pop culture from the past several decades, from Prince’s infamous butt-exposed performance in 1991, to Britney Spears kissing Madonna in 2003, to Kanye West’s “Imma let you finish” Taylor Swift interruption in 2009, to Miley Cyrus twerking on Robin Thicke in 2013, have occurred at MTV Awards shows.

Kevin Hart said he and The Rock aimed to create another moment of similar significance.

“I’m glad this year I plan on doing something for people to talk about – by pulling my d*** out.”

Well, Hart did not end up flashing the audience, but the screamingly extravagant nature of the opening may have been enough to go down in MTV Movie Awards history anyway.

The whole show started with Kevin and The Rock riding in from backstage on a Mad Max: Fury Road-themed tank. Hart was wearing one of the metal mask and restraint rigs Max wore near the start of the movie, and The Rock was wailing on a guitar that shot fire – and until you’ve seen a 6’5″ and insanely intimidating pro wrestler/actor wearing a spiky chainmail chestplate and jamming out on a double-necked guitar that is literally on fire, you have not truly experienced epic.

Kevin Hart and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson proceeded to blow the audience away with a boisterous and hilarious back-and-forth that was punctuated by pyrotechnics from the stage. The two celebs began by throwing barbs at one another, with The Rock making fun of Hart’s diminutive stature and calling Kevin a “hip-hop hobbit” and Hart firing right back by calling Johnson “chocolate Shrek.”

The two were just playing around, though, and they soon put aside their differences to turn their combined comedic jabs towards other celebs, including wrestler Hulk Hogan and the recent sex tape scandal he endured, as well as Leonardo Dicaprio and the rumor that he was actually raped by a bear during the bear mauling scene in his recent film, The Revenant. For the Dicaprio bit, Hart and The Rock even called on some fellow comedians, including Pitch Perfect 2 co-stars Adam DeVine and Rebel Wilson, to help them deliver the laughs.

All in all, Kevin Hart and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson did indeed manage to pull off their ambitious goal by pulling off an explosive and sure-to-be-remembered opener at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, and fans agree.
