Rihanna Documentary Coming Soon? ‘Needed Me’ Singer Spotted With ‘Battleship’ Director Peter Berg

Rihanna may be busy promoting the release of her eighth studio album, Anti, via her “Anti World Tour,” but is the songstress also in the process of filming for a new documentary? According to a new photo of Rihanna and director Peter Berg, it looks like the duo’s previously reported documentary may be underway.

Last year, it was reported that Rihanna would serve as the subject of a new music documentary directed by Peter Berg, who cast the “Kiss It Better” singer in his 2012 film, Battleship, although a projected release date for the film has not been announced.

Speaking on the nature of the documentary, Peter Berg explained that the film is set to be an “unfiltered look into Rihanna’s life and how she’s ascended to become a global icon,” noting that DA Pennebaker’s 1967 Bob Dylan documentary, Don’t Look Back, served as an influence for the impending project. In addition, the Rihanna documentary is said to be “much more a character study than a music film” and is set to detail Rihanna’s rise to global superstardom, Deadline reports.

While there’s currently no official word on a title or release date for Berg’s documentary, the film is expected to be released through the director’s new production company, Film 45, The Guardian reports. Berg’s website for the production company recently updated their site with new information regarding the project, which appears to be titled, Rihanna.

Now, it appears that Peter Berg and Rihanna may be in the process of filming for the impending documentary after the director took to Instagram to share a photo of himself and Rihanna hanging out during one of the singer’s stops on her “Anti World Tour.”

Berg took to Instagram on Sunday to post the black-and-white pic alongside a caption that reads, “This girl RiRi she’s not bad. See I’m smiling I ain’t mad.”

While the status of the unnamed documentary is still unknown, fans have already begun speculating that Berg may be capturing footage from Rihanna’s “Anti World Tour” for use in the impending film.

Peter Berg previously opened up about working alongside Rihanna for his 2012 sci-fi action film, Battleship, telling Entertainment Weekly that he was impressed by the songstress’ commitment to the role.

When asked about his decision to cast Rihanna in the film, Berg explained, “No, it was totally me. I’d obviously seen [Rihanna’s] videos and was a fan of hers. The videos were really sexy and obviously, you know, very entertaining to say the least. But what first caught my eye about Rihanna was an interview she did with Diane Sawyer after the Chris Brown incident, where she was very articulate, very poised, obviously a smart girl who talked about a very traumatic experience. That was a legitimate, violent, real experience that would traumatize anyone. I thought she handled herself very well. I was intrigued.”

“So as I was getting ready to cast, I was thinking about Rihanna… I asked to meet her, she came in in a pair of blue jeans, a T-shirt and flip-flops, and for two hours we just improv’d,” Berg further explained, “What I was looking for with her was a sense of adventure. You know to me, being a good actor, the most important quality is you’ve got to love to play, and to just be open to anything. And this girl clearly was. I knew right away that she’d be great.”

In addition to her role in Battleship, Rihanna also voiced the lead character in DreamWorks’ animated film, Home, and has been spotted filming for Luc Besson’s upcoming film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
