Notre Dame must battle East Regional top seed North Carolina for the third time this season in a game that will stream live on Sunday, not only for what would be the first Final Four berth for the Fighting Irish since 1978 — but also for some kind of redemption, after the Tar Heels blew Notre Dame off the court in an ACC semifinal game just 15 days ago.
North Carolina dominated that game in March 11, ripping off a 22-0 run in the last nine minutes of the first half that put the Tar Heels up 47-22 and effectively ended the game before Notre Dame had a chance to get going. The final score ended up at 78-47 as a shellshocked Fighting Irish team turned the ball over a staggering 17 times.

But Notre Dame knows that they are far from incapable of beating North Carolina. In fact, during the ACC regular season, Notre Dame dispatched North Carolina 80-76 — and, actually, were on a three-game winning streak against North Carolina heading into the ACC semifinal contest.
“They’re going to be mad about the last loss,” North Carolina guard Nate Britt said on Saturday. “They’re going to come out ready to play.”
But the Irish are also driven by the chance to get into the Final Four for the first time in almost four full decades, junior guard Steve Vasturia said — though they have not forgotten the blowout loss.
“Nobody as a competitor or a player wants to get smoked out of the gym like that,” Vasturia told the Notre Dame Insider site. “We’ve got a chance to go to the Final Four and they’re standing in our way. We’ve got to do everything we can to get past them.”

Tipoff is scheduled for 8:49 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, March 27. The live stream starts at 5:49 p.m. Pacific Time.
The game will be the final matchup of the “Elite 8” stage of the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament, following another showdown between ACC rivals earlier in the afternoon, pitting underdog Syracuse against Midwest Regional top seed Virginia.
On Saturday, the first Final Four matchup was set when Oklahoma upset Oregon 80-68, and Villanova got past popular tournament favorite Kansas, 64-59.
The game will be the seventh regional final for Notre Dame, but the 28th in the history of North Carolina. While the 1978 Final Four appearance remains the only time the Irish have reached that level, the Tar Heels have played in a record 18 — completing the journey with a national championship five times.
