Olivia Newton-John: Missing Former Boyfriend Found In Mexico

Olivia Newton-John’s boyfriend of nine years, Patrick McDermott, disappeared in June of 2005 while on an overnight fishing trip off the coast of San Pedro, California. The Coast Guard performed an exhaustive search of the area but in November 2008 declared that Newton-John’s boyfriend had probably drowned. Two months later, however, it was rumored that investigators had discovered that McDermott had faked his disappearance and was living in Mexico. Now, nearly 11 years later, DailyMail reports that those rumors were true, and Olivia’s former boyfriend has been found alive and well in rural Mexico, living with a new German girlfriend.

Australia’s Woman’s Day magazine reports that Olivia’s former boyfriend is living and working in the Mexican town of Sayulita according to private investigator Philip Klein. The first detective on the case was John Nazarian. He indicated he believes the reports, saying:

“It’s rumored he was with a German national. I spoke to people there [in Mexico]. The girl he was traveling with was described as having a German accent. To come up with the conclusion that he fell off the boat, and allegedly no one saw him fall off the boat, is the most preposterous thing I’ve ever heard in my life.”

Klein also reports that he received a phone call from the attorney of Newton-John’s former boyfriend.

“His lawyer called from Mexico City and said that Patrick didn’t want to be bothered. He hadn’t faked anything. He just wanted to get away from the drama.”

When Olivia Newton-John last said goodbye to her boyfriend, it was June 30, 2005. She was on a promotional tour, and he was heading out on an overnight fishing trip with 22 other people. None of them saw him fall overboard. Newton-John reported her boyfriend missing a week later when he didn’t show up for a family gathering. Adding credence to the theory at the time that he had faked his disappearance was the fact that McDermott had just filed for bankruptcy. He had $30,000 in debt that he was not able to pay. He had also taken out a new passport in a different name shortly before his disappearance.

Rumors and speculation have persisted since this tragedy in Olivia Newton-John’s life, with many theories on the fate of her boyfriend. Check out this report from Nancy Grace on Headline News in 2013.

Olivia Newton-John married John Easterling, founder and president of a natural remedy firm, in 2008. Shortly after their marriage, Olivia sold the Malibu home in which she had lived with boyfriend Patrick McDermott. She has remained friends, however, with his ex-wife, Yvette Nipar, who believes he is dead. Nipar wrote Amazon many letters asking them to stop promoting the book Phillip Klein had written about his investigation so that she and her son (McDermott’s son) could get on with their lives.

Olivia has not shared her thoughts on Patrick McDermott’s disappearance. She hasn’t indicated whether she believes he drowned, is living in Mexico, or met some other fate.
