James Holmes Charged 140 Times, 23 Counts Of Murder

Aurora, Colorado shooter James Holmes has formally been charged with 140 counts. Among those charges the Colorado theater shooter will face 24 counts of murder.

The 25-year-old Holmes will also face 116 counts of attempted murder based on the 58 people he attempted to gun down.

The breakdown of charges has not yet been revealed.

Holmes injured 58 people and killed 12 during his rampage. The killer was also charged with one count of possession of explosives after he booby-trapped his apartment. The explosives inside Holmes’ apartment were discovered as investigators examined his apartment following the theater shooting.

The former University of Colorado Denver student dropped out one month before the movie massacre and his lawyer’s are expected to dominate his trial with arguments over his sanity.

While Holmes faces criminal charges he will also face civil lawsuits. The theater where the shooting occurred is also being sued by several victims and their families.

Holmes in the meantime has not been charged with the killing of a baby that passed away due to a miscarriage. A female in the theater lost her 6-year-old daughter to the shooting and on the following Saturday she had a miscarriage believed to have been caused by the trauma from the shooting. Colorado law dictates that homicide charges can only be applied to people “who had been born and alive.”

The judge has placed a gag order on lawyers and law enforcement while barring the University of Colorado from release James Holmes’ records from his year spent at the school as a neuroscience graduate student. The judges sealing of court records is being challenged by various media outlets.
