‘Suicide Squad’ Star Margot Robbie Says Harley Quinn Couldn’t Get The Right Look

Margot Robbie plays Harley Quinn in David Ayer’s upcoming film, Suicide Squad. In the film, Harley is wearing an outfit entirely new to the character and, in a recent interview, Margot revealed that the costume seen in the film is the result of multiple costume changes. It seems none of the outfits worn by Harley Quinn in the comic books or the various animated series were quite right for live-action film.

Suicide Squad Star Margot Robbie Talks About Getting Harley Quinn Right

Robbie revealed that finding the right look for Harley was problematic and Quinn’s traditional court jester outfit was among the first costumes she tried on. The Suicide Squad actress said there were countless variations on Harley’s wardrobe that she went through with the film’s costume department, before they finally settled with the outfit worn by Margot in the film.

“I cannot emphasis enough how many outfits, and how many variations of the Harley Quinn costume we tried. We tried the court jester costume, we tried the corset and skirt, we tried leather pants, we tried literally every type of costume possible for her.”

Robbie added that she was pleased with the final costume. She also implied that this may not be the last time audiences see her in a Harley Quinn outfit.

“I really love where we ended up. And who knows, maybe in the sequels we’ll go with the court jester one. I think there’s a world of possibilities.”

Margot Robbie Wants To See Suicide Squad More Than You! No, Really.

When people tell Margot that they’re dying to see Suicide Squad, she says she has a good laugh, because they have no idea how badly she wants to see it. She says she has been so excited to see it that she can’t even play it cool around others. Part of the reason Margot is so eager to see the film is to see her own character, Harley Quinn, come alive on the screen.

“I think it’s going to be so cool, and I just love that there’s a chick character who’s that bada**, and who’s actually, like funnier and crazier and stronger than some of the males,” says the Suicide Squad actress. “I think that rarely happens.”

Ever since the first teaser was leaked, Robbie’s Harley Quinn broke out as the fan favorite character and her popularity has only grown with each consecutive teaser. Even with that much attention, Margot points out that Suicide Squad is an ensemble cast and she can’t compliment her co-stars enough for their talent and professionalism. She says working with everyone was one of the best experiences of her life.

If fate had worked differently, Robbie might have missed the chance to work with this squad. She revealed she was about to sign on with another project when Warner Bros. contacted her about Suicide Squad. At the time, the studio had very little information and could only tell her that they wanted her to play the Harley Quinn comic book character. They added that David Ayer would be directing.

Margot said that was all she needed to hear. She said she had been a fan of Ayer after having watched End of Watch (2012). Robbie said she found the film to be brilliant and she was impressed enough by Ayer’s talent to have watched the film four times. The Suicide Squad actress knew David Ayer would bring a different, darker feel to comic book movies, which is just what she thinks Hollywood should be doing with the adaptations.

“And you know, fortunately the end product [became] something even better than I could have ever imagined,” says Suicide Squad‘s Margot Robbie.
