‘Downton Abbey’ Finale: Romance And Babies As We Say Goodbye And Our Favorite Family Begins A New Chapter In Their Lives

Tonight, the Downton Abbey finale airs in the U.S. and viewers will bid farewell to the PBS series that has kept many glued to their seats on Sunday nights for six seasons. Fans have come to love the Downton Abbey characters and it’s safe to say there will be a fair amount of tears shed at the close of the final scene. We do have a few hints as to what the Downton Abbey finale holds in store for viewers. The Inquisitr shares a few below.

Spoiler alert: Spoilers for tonight’s Downton Abbey finale appear below. Stop reading now if you don’t wish to read spoilers.

According to TV Line, viewers will learn on tonight’s Downton Abbey finale that someone besides Anna is pregnant. Fans were thrilled when Anna became pregnant. After all the troubles she and Mr. Bates have had, news that this Downton Abbey couple will be starting a family was good news indeed. But who else could be pregnant? Well, given that it’s Downton Abbey, it’s probably someone who is married. In the finale, might fans learn that newly-married Mary is pregnant? Perhaps. She seems the most likely candidate. But then there is Mrs. Hughes, also newly married. She runs Downton Abbey with a firm hand and a big heart and balances Carson’s old school ways with a small dose of the new world. She’s a bit old to become pregnant for the first time. But Downton Abbey has surprised us before, maybe they will do it again with Mrs. Hughes in the finale.

In the previous episode of Downton Abbey, Thomas slit his wrists. Viewers watched his downward spiral over this last season, but in the series finale, he finds a new purpose. But, it’s not what he expected or where he expected. What could that mean? One theory: Throughout Season 6, Thomas has interacted with the Downton Abbey children more than usual. Mary and George visited him in the last episode. Perhaps Mary is the pregnant character, and perhaps she and her new husband move away from Downton Abbey and take Thomas with them to help with the children. Mary has seemed especially concerned for his plight. This seems a likely possibility.

The third Downton Abbey finale spoiler provided by TV Line is that Spratt and Denker’s relationship comes to a “satisfying, hilarious conclusion.” These two have been fun to watch. Last week, viewers learned that the mystery woman with an advice column, the woman Edith was to interview for a job at her newspaper, wasn’t a woman at all but was, rather, Spratt. Could this hilarious ending for this Downton Abbey pair have something to do with this? Maybe they make some kind of arrangement that Spratt will do the writing but Denker will be the face of the column? Who knows. Tune in to see.

There are three more Downton Abbey finale spoilers. The first is that there is already some secret between Mary and Henry. Mary is afraid of marriage and getting hurt again. It seems more likely that the secret is hers, especially given the behavior we’ve seen from her in the past. But Downton Abbey hasn’t let viewers get to know her new husband very well so maybe in the finale all will learn about some secret he is keeping.

The other two hints about what happens in tonight’s Downton Abbey finale are that at least one character gets another chance at love and that one character says they’re “done with it” and means it. There are two Downton Abbey characters who come to mind regarding the second chance at love. Will the finale bring together Mrs. Patmore and Mr. Mason? He has seemed to be interested in her. Or maybe Isobel and Lord Merton? And who is “done with it?” This could be said by Downton Abbey’s patriarch and keeper, Lord Grantham. Throughout the season, the family has discussed the possibility of leaving Downton Abbey and moving to smaller accommodations as the rest of the world has done. Maybe the finale is going to have everyone, literally, saying goodbye to Downton Abbey, the home of the family and servants fans have come to love. If it does, it will be a very teary farewell indeed.

The Downton Abbey finale airs tonight on PBS at 9 p.m. ET.
