Tim Gunn Hated Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscar Look, Says Did Not Rise To Occasion

It’s rare that Jennifer Lawrence steps out for an event looking anything but divine, as she is typically outfitted by the Dior Fashion House, thanks to the numerous campaigns the star has been involved with for the couture house. Besides typically having the ensembles to make jaws drop, Lawrence’s natural beauty certainly does not do the star a disservice at all.

However, Jennifer Lawrence met criticism recently when she graced our television screens and the most notable awards show of the year on February 28, for the annual Academy Awards at which the beauty was nominated for her portrayal in Joy. Outfitted in a sheer Dior gown, Lawrence was certain to draw the attention of onlookers, yet a notable fashion critic by the name of Tim Gunn loathed the look, and made it known on the post-Grammy episode of Fashion Police. The February 29 episode of the well-known show involving a panel of harsh fashionista critics joined forces to recap their views of favorite and least favorite ensembles at the 88th Oscars.

Gunn did not hold back, and was sure to note his disdain for Lawrence’s attire of the night. Countering Brad Goreski’s opinion of the Dior dress, Gunn compared the looks to something a design student would have thrown together.

“I loathed this look. I thought it was the amateur hour. From my many years of teaching, this to me looked like a student project.”

The 62-year-old Project Runway mentor continued to explain why it is that he was so turned off by Jen’s Oscar look, stating that she just didn’t rise to the occasion the way that he would expect the stunner to.

“The evidence in the boning, the lace over it; it was all the sort of cheap shots that students pull! And I will add: For Jennifer Lawrence and her station in Hollywood and this industry, when she appeared, I honestly thought, ‘Who is that?!’ I just felt that … she’s not rising to the occasion that I would expect her to. I’m a truth teller!”

Tim Gunn has certainly been known for his self-professed role as a “truth teller.” The fashion mentor and critic also recently made headlines for speaking honestly about Kanye West and the entire Kardashian-Jenner clan;s sense of fashion. Us Weekly relays the opinions Gunn has of the reality stars and rapper Kanye.

“During an interview in December, the [Tim Gunn] called Kanye West’s Yeezy fashion line ‘dumb clothes.’ A month earlier, he told the Huffington Post that the Kardashians and their style are ‘vulgar.’ “

That isn’t the first time that Gunn made his disapproval of the Kardashian’s known. Earlier, the television personality honed in on Kim Kardashian and cuttingly tore her Selfie book efforts to shreds with his truthful words. To Us Weekly, Gunn shared that after glancing at the selfie book, entitled Selfish, by Kim Kardashian, “I feel my IQ is plummeting!”

When it comes to Jennifer Lawrence, however, the opinions of Gunn are not shared by all fashion and beauty critics. USA Today shared their take on Lawrence’s Oscar look.

“She’s had bangs, loose waves and even a pixie cut since her first appearance on the Oscars red carpet in 2010. But her hair and makeup at last night’s events may have been her best yet — or our favorite at least. ”

Perhaps Lawrence, herself, was not overly confident in her ensemble of the night as the starlet was a no show on the red carpet and had many wondering if she was even going to attend the show. Lawrence appeared and dazzled, while not winning the Oscar this time around, reminding fans of her grace and beauty regardless what clothing she has on her frame.
