‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ Adds ‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Vet Tommy Flanagan

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues to add more cast members as filmmakers are currently in the early stages of production. While the film will see the return of most of its original cast members, producers recently announced that Sons of Anarchy alum Tommy Flanagan has officially joined the project. What part will Flanagan play in the highly anticipated sequel?

According to Collider, Flanagan joins an already large cast that includes Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper. For his part, Flanagan is just one of many new faces in the movie, including Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, and Pom Klementieff, to name a few.

While the details of Flanagan’s role are unknown, Slash Film is reporting that the Sons of Anarchy veteran is set to play a character in direct competition with Star-Lord and his team of heroes. Apparently, Flanagan will play a member of Yondu’s Ravagers, which is a perfect fit for the actor, especially considering his past television roles.

Flanagan is known for his role as Filip “Chibs” Telford on the hit biker drama. Chibs was an exciting character who was both intimidating and morally conflicted, which should mesh well with his casting for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. If nothing else, Flanagan’s casting adds another layer of depth to an already deep cast.

The main plot of the upcoming sequel is still a mystery. The only thing that has been leaked involves the Peter Quill’s quest to find out the identity of his real father. It has been rumored that Kurt Russell is up for the role of Pratt’s father, although this has yet to be officially confirmed.

That being said, Slash Film is reporting that Russell will not be up for the part of Pratt’s father in the new animated version of the story. Apparently, Jonathan Frakes is in line to play the role in the new television series from Disney, titled Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Will his appearance on the small screen offer any clues as to what fans can expect to unfold in the sequel?

Frakes will appear during one episode in the first season of the show. Although the storyline of the episode in question is unknown, there is little chance that it will have any kind of bearing on the movie. After all, director James Gunn recently revealed that the movie will take a different track than the comics concerning Star Lord’s mysterious father.

“[Quill’s father] is definitely not the character who it is in the comics,” he shared.

At this point, the only thing is known about Quill’s father is that he is some kind of alien. This was revealed in the first film with some of the scenes that were cut involving the planet where his father originated. Whether or not this is the storyline that is developed in the upcoming movie is still up in the air.

In addition to the aforementioned cast, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, and Glenn Close are also expected to reprise their role in the new film. The only returning cast member that has yet to be confirmed is John C. Reilly.

While fans for more casting news concerning Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, production for the highly anticipated sequel is currently underway. With filming already started, fans shouldn’t have to wait much longer to find out if Russell is set to play Quill’s father and exactly what role producers have in mind for Flanagan.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, directed by James Gunn, is set to open in theaters everywhere on May 5, 2017.
