Kylie Minogue Blasts Kylie Jenner Following Attempt To Trademark ‘Kylie’

Kylie Minogue is filing legal papers in an attempt to prevent Kylie Jenner from trademarking the name “Kylie,” all while blasting Jenner as a “secondary reality television personality” and a “home-schooled graduate” in the process.

According to a new report by Yahoo!, Jenner has applied to trademark the name “Kylie” in the U.S. so that she can use her name as a brand in advertising services, which will likely include the expansion of her existing beauty and clothing lines.

However, KDB Pty Ltd – Kylie Minogue’s company – filed papers to oppose Jenner’s trademark application last week and claimed that if the court approves Jenner’s move to trademark the name “Kylie” “it would cause confusion among consumers and dilute the pop singer’s brand,” Yahoo! revealed.

The Guardian also reported this week that Minogue’s representatives described Jenner as a “secondary reality television personality” in their recent legal filing and added that in the U.S. Kylie Jenner was merely “a supporting character” on the E! reality series Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

KDB then went on to criticize Jenner in the Kylie legal case, noting that the Keeping Up With The Kardashians Kylie has faced serious criticism on countless occasions, particularly by members of African American communities and disability rights groups for what they described as Jenner’s “photographic exhibitionism” on Instagram.

The BBC posted excerpts from the legal papers on February 29, which described Kylie Jenner as a “home-schooled graduate” and read that Jenner’s “photographic exhibitionism and controversial posts have drawn criticism from, for example, the disability rights and African-American communities.”

According to The Guardian, KDB — which The Mirror is reporting names Minogue and her parents Ronald and Carol as company directors — then described Kylie Minogue as an “internationally renowned performing artist, humanitarian, and breast cancer activist” in contrast.

The papers filed last week revealed that Minogue already has a few trademarks around her first name and supposedly has already trademarked her full name, Kylie Minogue, the name of her perfume, Kylie Minogue Darling, and the term “Lucky – the Kylie Minogue musical.”

Minogue’s filing also revealed that Minogue had registered her website URL, www.kylie.com, 20 years ago in 1996, which was actually a year before Kylie Jenner was born.

However, it appears that Kylie Jenner has also been selling using the Kylie name, even posting a shot of a batch of new lipglosses from her cosmetics line, Kylie Cosmetics, to her official Instagram page on February 26 emblazoned with the word “Kylie.”

“My new shade by @kyliecosmetics!” Jenner captioned the social media make-up photo last week, “Who can guess the name?”

Kylie Jenner then alluded to her Kylie cosmetics line again on February 29, where she revealed on Twitter that her infamous lip kit had sold out in just seven minutes.

“Thank you guys for another record setting day for @kyliecosmetics sold out in about 7 minutes. We did it!” Jenner tweeted to her more than 14 million followers, adding “We have continued making more for the next restock coming very soon.”

So far, both Kylie’s have stayed tight-lipped when it comes to explicitly discussing their impending legal battle over their shared first name, though Minogue appeared to hint at the case on social media when posting lyrics from her 2000 hit “Lightyears” on February 28.

“Hello….. My name is KYLIE #lightyears,” Kylie Minogue tweeted out to her more than 2 million followers last week, which was posted shortly after The Mirror reported that Kylie Minogue has hired the U.S. attorney Rebeccah Gan of American company Wenderoth LLP to represent her in the case.

Which Kylie – Kylie Minogue or Kylie Jenner – do you think should get the trademark rights for “Kylie”?
