Oscars 2016: The Most Bizarre & Unique Outfits Of The Night — The Best Twitter Reactions
The 88th Annual Academy Awards (aka the 2016 Oscars) hit the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on February 28, and the big movie event undoubtedly brought out some of the most unique looks of the 2016 awards season.
While some Oscars attendees got a whole lot of praise on the best dressed list for their Academy Awards looks, other red carpet gowns divided opinion when they headed down the 2016 Oscars red carpet.
Heidi Klum
While it’s true supermodel Heidi Klum can wear pretty much anything when she hits a red carpet like the Oscars, Klum’s lavender Marchesa Grecian inspire gown left fashion fans scratching their heads. Mashable noted that it looked like Heidi had been “draped in what seems like her curtains” when she hit the Academy Awards red carpet, while Twitter Oscars watchers weren’t much kinder.
“WTF! WT Actual F! My eyes are bleeding!” @LPearsonSmith tweeted out about Heidi’s Academy Awards look, while the New York Post wrote that Klum was “channelling the fairy godmother on the #Oscars red carpet.”
Amy Poehler
Amy Poehler definitely took a risk when she walked the Oscars red carpet in a black caftan gown embodied with flower and butterfly designs.
Some social media users praised Poehler’s outside-of-the-box Academy Awards choice, like @rachel_is_here who tweeted out during the Oscars red carpet, “Amy Poehler. This dress. Love it. #Oscars.”
However, other Oscars watchers weren’t quite as excited by Amy’s Academy Awards look.
“#Oscars Amy Poehler’s dress looks like a better tailored cousin to my old piano covering cloth,” @LadyTerralia wrote, while Twitter user @itsemilybishh added, “I love me some Amy Poehler but I do not love that dress….”
Kerry Washington
Kerry Washington made a serious fashion statement when she walked the Oscars red carpet in a half black half white gown with a full leather bodice. Washington’s unique Oscars look divided opinion online, with fans either praising or not exactly loving the Academy Awards gown.
“Kerry Washington’s dress is A+,” Oscar watcher @emilynussbaum wrote on Twitter, while Hollywood Life described Washington’s unique Oscar gown as being “gladiator chic.”
However, other Academy Awards fans weren’t so thrilled. “I love Kerry Washington but she could’ve stayed home with that dress,” @Jenny_jenjenn tweeted out, while @ktumulty noted that Kerry’s Oscars gown appeared to be having a bit of an identity crisis.
“What the hell is going on with Kerry Washington’s dress? Biker on the top; bride on the bottom. #Oscars2016.”
Sandy Powell
Costume designer Sandy Powell, who was nominated at the 2016 Oscars for her stunning costume designs, blazed her own trail in at the Oscars when she walked the Academy Awards red carpet in a shiny green pantsuit with bright orange hair.
Music critic David Greenwald noted on social media that it appeared Powell was honoring the late David Bowie with her unique Oscars look.
“Costume designer Sandy Powell (‘Velvet Goldmine’), quite possibly doing a Bowie tribute #oscars,” he tweeted.
Orlando Jones
Orlando Jones stood out when he walked the Oscars red carpet in this show stopping shiny tuxedo. Jones’s unique look divided Oscars fashion critics online, with some social media users praising his distinctive Oscars choice while others weren’t exactly fans.
“Orlando Jones tux jacket looks likes a Nipsey Russell wardrobe reject from The Wiz!” @clate wrote, while Twitter user @cussincori simply branded Jones’s Oscars look as “ridiculous.”
However, it wasn’t all bad news for the Academy Awards attendee, as @_MissLeandra noted that “Orlando Jones’ suit jacket is so out there, but it works. #Oscars.”
Jones even joked about the divided opinion on his Academy Awards look himself, tweeting, “That feeling when you’re simultaneously on numerous Best Dressed and Worst Dressed lists at the #Oscars. #OscarsSoLando.”
