Chrissy Teigan Defends IVF, Choice For Girl Through Twitter Messages

Chrissy Teigen has just revealed that she and husband John Legend have had the opportunity to choose the sex of their baby as a result of their In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) procedure. In the end, Chrissy Teigen chose to have a baby girl.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend spent years trying to conceive before undergoing IVF treatments. According to E! Online, the swimsuit model finally shared her struggles on an episode of her TV show, Fablife, back in September. Keeping quiet had been hard for Chrissy Teigen, especially when fans and reporters would ask when she was planning on starting a family. Chrissy Teigen said she was glad to finally break her silence.

“It’s just nice to have a show and kind of acknowledge it to people because I felt like I was keeping a secret from them and it was weird. So it’s nice to have all my social media friends know and have them share their stories, too.”

On October 12, 2015, Chrissy Teigen announced via her Twitter and Instagram accounts that she was pregnant. Chrissy Teigen posted a picture of John Legend resting his hand on her tiny baby bump with the message,

“John and I are so happy to announce that we are pregnant ? As many of you know, we’ve been trying to for a while now.”

Since then, Chrissy Teigen has regularly updated fans about her pregnancy including food cravings, hormonal surges and other humorous rants. This week, however, Chrissy Teigen went further by revealing that she had the option of choosing the sex of her baby. In an interview with People, Chrissy Teigen explained the process behind selecting the sex and her potential relationship with the girl’s father John Legend.

“Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl’… I think I was most excited and allured by the fact that John would be the best father to a little girl. That excited me.”

During their IVF treatments, only one embryo was implanted at a time, which made sex selection easier to account for. Chrissy Teigen is optimistic about the future of more children, though. While baby number one is a girl, baby number two seems destined to be a boy.

“A boy will come along. We’ll get there too, so it’s not like we really have to pick.”

Since Chrissy Teigen shared this decision, the Internet has responded in its typical way. While most fans were excited and praised Chrissy Teigen’s openness about the subject, some felt she had gone too far. According to E! Online, comments through social media ranged from offensive to ignorant. Many didn’t seem to understand what IVF actually entailed.

Using her Twitter account to try to tackle some of the questions and comments, Chrissy Teigen explained the reasoning behind her choice.

“we didn’t create a little girl. we had multiple embryos. girls and boys. we simply chose to put in a female first (and second)… we didn’t “throw away” anything and still would love to have more of both in the future. hard to explain such a complicated process here.”

Despite what seemed to be her best intentions, Chrissy Teigen could not compete with the Internet and by the end of the night she seemingly decided to stop posting.

The most poignant tweet from Chrissy Teigen was in response to a very callous Twitter member. Chrissy Teigen responded to the hatred by declaring, “natural or ivf, my daughter will never speak to another human like this.”

More and more women are turning to IVF to help with fertility issues and Chrissy Teigen’s openness and honesty about what she has gone through has hopefully helped to broach an often painful and secret struggle felt by women across the world.
