Adele Gets Vocal About Kesha During Her Brit Award Acceptance Speech

Adele did more than dominate with four wins at the 2016 Brit Awards. Adele took a moment to throw out support for fellow musician Kesha according to Rolling Stone.

“I’d like to take a quick moment to publicly thank my management and my record label for embracing the fact that I’m a woman and be encouraged by it,” Adele stated after thanking her fellow female artists. “And I’d like to take this moment to support Kesha,” Adele finished by stating “Thank you very much.”

Kesha lost her legal battle to sever ties with music producer Dr. Luke this week due to alleged sexual abuse. Since then, several people in the music industry have issued statements of support for Kesha but Adele’s choice to pause in a moment of celebration was met with substantial applause and cheers.

The Brit Awards are considered the British equivalent to the Grammys. According to the BBC, Adele felt quite emotional over her wins which included Best Album. “I feel a bit worn out, emotionally. But it was absolutely incredible. I was hoping to win one but to get that many was amazing and very lovely,” Adele told reporters backstage. It was during her acceptance speech for Best Female Artist that Adele shared her support of Kesha.

Adele’s newest album 25 was released in November of 2015 to much critical acclaim and commercial success. It had been a long four years for Adele fans who had been waiting since 2011 for new music besides her Academy Award winning “Skyfall” for the 2013 James Bond movie of the same name. 25 broke sales records in both the U.K. and U.S. proving that Adele’s popularity was still at a peak. Vogue reported that Adele took a break between albums for multiple reasons, but most notably her new venture — motherhood.

“My main thing is Mum, then it’s me, then it’s work,” Adele remarked. “I think I had to take the right amount of time off to let people miss me.” And miss her they did. Her continued success not only came in the form of awards for the evening but featured her in one of the most coveted spots of the show as the last thing people would remember.

As the closing act, Adele delivered a Brit Award performance that was reportedly magical. Several weeks ago, fans were frustrated when Adele’s Grammys performance was plagued with sound issues. The Brit Awards sound crew had their act together, however, and the audience marveled while Adele sang like, well, Adele.

While Adele’s music and personality are known for a more serious tone, the singer showed her lighter side on The Ellen Degeneres Show earlier this week. During the appearance, Adele entertained the talk show host by filming a hidden camera segment in Jamba Juice and followed up with a hilarious game of “5 Second Rule” in which Adele revealed her nicknames for the female anatomy. In January, the singer’s car karaoke video with late night host James Corden went viral.

Though Adele specifically spoke of her support for Kesha, music fans most certainly have to wonder if her “thank you” to her management team celebrating her womanhood could also be a show of support to Taylor Swift, who has repeatedly been the subject of tirades by rapper Kanye West. According to Billboard, in December Adele voiced support for Taylor Swift regarding her crusade against music streaming services. At the time, Adele stated she and Swift often get “lumped together” because they are both “powerful” women who stand up for themselves.
