Spencer Pratt Compares ‘The Hills’ Cancellation To 9/11

Spencer Pratt is sensationally comparing the cancellation of the MTV hit reality series The Hills to 9/11 and revealing the calculated moves that made him and Heidi Montag the stars of the show.

Pratt, who starred on The Hills alongside wife Heidi Montag, Lauren Conrad, Kristen Cavallari, and Audrina Patridge, made the eyebrow-raising comparison during a profile feature interview with Vice’s Broadly, where he also revealed that a lavish trip to Costa Rica following the show’s cancellation left him and Montag broke.

“[The Hills getting cancelled] was our 9/11,” Spencer Pratt recently told Broadly of the 2010 cancellation of the reality drama series that ran for six seasons, admitting that he and Heidi were so devastated by the end of the show that they left the country following the news.

Spencer told the site that he and Montag moved to Costa Rica following The Hills’ cancellation and planned to buy a house to make the move more permanent. However, the couple holed themselves up in the Ritz Carlton for six months, which left Spencer and Heidi with hardly any cash to their name.

But that wasn’t the only shocking claim Spencer Pratt made in the candid new interview.

Pratt also claims in Broadly’s report that he used his extensive knowledge of TV production to get himself a place on The Hills in 2007, and he further used his know-how to mold Heidi into the star of the show, a plot Pratt described as “operation upstage” or “upstage LC.”

“I was treating the show like a producer because I literally just made a show on FOX,” Pratt told the site of his time on The Hills, claiming that he “didn’t know how to be on-camera talent.”

Pratt also claimed in the interview that he and Heidi masterminded a number of plot lines for the show to make themselves more famous, adding that it was their decision to become villains in order to bring in more ratings for The Hills and MTV, something that allegedly didn’t sit so well with Pratt and Montag’s co-star Lauren Conrad.

“She was like, ‘It’s my show, my world!'” Heidi allegedly recalled Conrad telling her. “[Lauren] didn’t like someone coming in and changing up the formula because it was her world and she wanted it to stay that way.”

Spencer also admitted that he often called the paparazzi to tell them not only his and Heidi’s but also Lauren Conrad’s whereabouts while The Hills was still on the air.

“Lauren had never been in a tabloid until I started calling the paparazzi on her, for her,” Spencer told the site, “Look, all the big stars: Do you think that Brad and Angelina randomly got caught on the beach in Africa in the middle of nowhere where they reveal they’re dating? No! These are strategic moves.”

Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag’s latest confessions come just months after Pratt finally admitted that he started the rumor that Lauren Conrad had once made a sex tape, which plagued her time on The Hills.

“Lauren is a cold-hearted killer,” Spencer Pratt told Complex of Conrad back in October. “That’s what people don’t get. She will cut you in your sleep. She tried to destroy us. If you want to throw missiles, I’m throwing a nuke. This is how I operate.”

Heidi and Spencer also claimed in the interview that Montag’s family were “paid off” while appearing on MTV’s hit show to appear that they were against the couple and on “Team LC.”

“They didn’t really feel that way,” Heidi Montag told Complex of her family dynamic on The Hills, “that was the hardest thing, when everyone else still had their families.”
