From Cute Curls To Ragged Rockstar Locks — Harry Styles’ Hair Through The Years
Many outlets including Glamour Magazine have provided us with pictorials celebrating Harry Styles’ sartorial choices and his fashion evolution over the years. The aptly named Styles has indeed breezed through a number of different styles, from his preppy look in the early days of One Direction, to his grungy bandanna and flannel shirt days, right up to the recent Mick Jagger-esque greasy hair and glam-rock printed suits.
Fewer pictorials have been devoted to Harry Styles’ hair, though One Direction stylist Lou Teasdale did give Details magazine some advice about how to achieve the “I woke up like this” tresses the 1D boys are famed for.
Here is a look back at the evolution of the most famous head of curls on planet earth
When Harry Styles first appeared on the scene in the early 10’s and launched his hostile takeover of all of our hearts, his curls were lustrous, glossy and sweet. Lou would often brush the curls forward and pull Harry’s fringe to the side, so his forehead was covered by a lush brown stripe. Tiny puffs of brown sat around Harry’s ears and on the nape of his neck, reminding us that this was indeed a curly-haired lad.
A little more spiky here — Harry and Lou’s love affair with gel and spray was beginning. It’s obvious that a bit of texturising has been done to get those fringe strands looking straight as arrows. Only one tiny curl has been allowed to live — it sits in a beautiful barrel over Harry’s left ear.
Harry’s Elvis Presley moment. It is not known how Lou Teasdale made Harry’s hair stand erect at such an awesome height, while keeping it looking soft and stroke-able, like you could run your hand through that fringe and there would not even be a little bit of hair spray crispiness.
We suspect that there is a secret hidden within that soft quiff — a heck of a lot of back-combing and a big dollop of super-strength product. It is the perfect crime!
Harry in a hat! This was the moment chest-flashing Harry Styles became a thing, debuting his nice-looking torso and distinctive tattoos. Nobody’s eyes were really on his head at the time, but in retrospect, we can appreciate his hat and the way the tufts of hair jut carelessly under and around it.
A sky-high quiff flanked by raggedy side-curls.
The structure of this hair is a bit mohawky, with that big brick at the top and some sparse little curls around the ears.
The curls are Liam in the sidecar in “Kiss You” and the brick is the Zayn Malik motorcycle main-event.
Harry’s bandanna period. Some people wondered if Harry was going through that awkward experience where you are trying to grow your hair out and there’s a period of a few months where it just doesn’t look good.
If this was the case, Harry got through it by going for a grungier fashion look with a lot of natural fibers, and even a hint of facial hair. The bandanna pulled the look together and it all made sense. Go Harry!
Harry sometimes used his bandanna to tame his hair rather more strictly, not really allowing his curls to do anything. On these days he would go for a winter-y layered look with a blazer, jumper, white t-shirt and statement feature like a spotty lapel. The stripey jungle-print bandanna did not match the spots and the grandpa jumper at all, but it still worked and we still loved him
Harry’s quiff is high and mighty here, but rather than going for a mohawk look, Lou Teasdale has allowed all the hair to sit evenly in a fluffy mass. The curls at the sides are glossy and pretty, with no obvious product. All of Harry’s locks sit in harmony around Harry’s face, which is looking very tanned here in the winter of ’13.
Harry’s hair is getting longer here, and he opts to show off his fashionably-raggedy tresses under a stylish black hat. There is still a bit of curl in that long hair — note the beautiful curlicue next to the mole on his left cheek.
Harry Styles as we know him today — long-haired, suited up, and with barely a curl in sight. Wild individual strands jut madly every which-way. A mighty section of hair at the top of his head swoops dramatically to the side, breaking up the symmetry and adding a wild and edgy touch to Harry’s look on the night he wore that famous/infamous Gucci suit
