‘The Good Wife’ Will Officially End This Season, Confirms Julianna Margulies

The Super Bowl was enlightening for a number of reasons. The underdog Broncos won, in what seemed like experience over youth, Bruno Mars killed it, and the end of The Good Wife was announced, to the shock of fans everywhere. Creators say they want to go out at the “top of their creative game,” but many think The Good Wife‘s days were numbered after they killed off Josh Charles’ character, Will Gardner.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the end of The Good Wife was announced to a huge audience of Super Bowl viewers. The CBS network entertainment president put out a statement that explained the move.

“It’s never easy to say goodbye to one of the crown jewels of your network and studio, much less to a show that is among the best on television,” CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller and CBS TV Studios president David Stapf said Sunday in a joint statement. “But it also feels very right to end with the seven-year story its creators envisioned, and to celebrate the show’s final run while at the top of its creative game. It has been CBS’ sincere privilege to broadcast and produce The Good Wife for seven extraordinary seasons. We thank and applaud the outstanding cast, led by the impeccable Julianna Margulies, and the consummate writing and producing team, headed by the brilliant Robert and Michelle King, who brought to life a smart, sophisticated series that has delivered audiences so many memorable characters and unforgettable moments. It is a series that will only grow in prestige as its episodes are watched again or discovered by new viewers for many years to come.”

Juliana Margulies said that her time on The Good Wife was an incredible experience professionally.

“Telling the story of the Education of Alicia Florrick is the creative dream of a lifetime. It was always our plan to tell it over 7 seasons. We wanted the story to have a beginning, middle, and an end — that’s the only way actions can have real consequences — and it’s the reason we had episode titles count up from one word to four, then back down again.”

Variety is reporting that Margulies hinted that come April, she will be unemployed, as she was aware of The Good Wife coming to an end, yet at that time, a few weeks ago, the creators denied it. With many awards and seven seasons, all involved decided it was time to hang it up.

But People Magazine says that sad fans took to Twitter to lament the end of an era.

“#TheGoodWife news is killing my #SuperBowl buzz. Counting on Bey and Bruno to help bring it back. #SB50”

“@CBS canceling #TheGoodWife with a #SuperBowl ad is pretty ironic given the fan base hatred for football games delaying the show so much.”

“I don’t care who loses the Super Bowl now that I know we’re all losing The Good Wife at the end of this season. #TheGoodWife #tgw”

USA Today said that ending The Good Wife at the end of this season will be the natural conclusion to the story of Alicia Florrick.

“The Good Wife has been the creative experience of a lifetime,” the Kings said. “We’re looking forward to using this seventh season to bring Alicia’s story to its natural conclusion. We couldn’t be more excited and grateful.”

All good things come to an end, and fans are now looking forward to Julianna Margulies’ next project.
