Google Nexus 7 Selling Fast, Becoming Hard To Find For Shoppers

The Google Nexus 7 has been such a hit since retailers started selling it Friday that shoppers are having a hard time finding them on the shelves.

The hot-selling tablet has been flying off the shelves at stores where it is stocked, while some other retailer are still waiting to get a shipment of Google’s newest device, PCWorld reported. For customers looking for the Google Nexus 7 in a brick-and-mortar store, Sam’s Club and GameStop have yielded the most success, though these sites actually list the device as out of stock or on backorder, the report said.

The Google Nexus 7 has been popular ever since Google unveiled the device on June 27 at its Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco, PCWorld reported. Customers had been able to pre-order it at a handful of retailers for the past two weeks, and the first shipments went out Friday.

PCWorld placed calls to several retailers on the East Coast early Sunday, finding that those stores which are already selling the Google Nexus 7 are generally sold out or only have a few in stock.

“We blew through the first two allotments,” a GameStop spokesperson told Reuters.

Others, like a Staples store in Ohio, had not yet received the tablet yet. Customers who order the tablet through GameStop can look forward to some waiting, the report said–current orders are already backed up to the third wave of reservations, due to be delivered Aug. 7.

It’s still unclear whether customers will be able to order the Google Nexus 7 through Amazon. Google’s tablet will be in direct competition with the Kindle, so it might be unlikely that Amazon allows Google to sell its Nexus 7 through the site. Still, Tech Radar reported that Google is in talks with Amazon over the possibility of selling the tablet there.

In its review of the Google Nexus 7, PCWorld called the 7-inch Android tablet “the one to beat” and said it resets expectations of what an inexpensive tablet could and should be. The review did not that the tablet lacks a memory card extension slot, so it recommends the 16GB version for $249 over the 8GB version for $199.
