As reported by In Style, Dr. Jessica Weiser, a dermatologist at New York Dermatology Group in New York, said that baking soda can be used to relieve common skin care problems.
“It can be used for numerous purposes including as a mild exfoliant to help gently remove dead skin cells from the skin surface (or even to help remove remainders of spray tan), or as a topical acne treatment to calm a breakout with antibacterial properties.”
Dr. Weiser cautioned that like any other skin care regimen, too much of a good thing can be bad. Overusing baking soda can cause irritation, so it’s important to make sure to scrub gently and not use baking soda too often. It should also be avoided around open wounds and can also cause dryness, so make sure to incorporate a good moisturizing routine as well.
When using baking soda as part of a skin care routine, Dr. Weiser suggested starting slowly.
“Given the risk for dryness and sensitivity, start using baking soda products only once a week. If treatments are well tolerated treatments can be increased to twice weekly.”
