Lamar Odom Update: Former NBA Star Is ‘Looking More Like’ His Old Self

Lamar Odom is reportedly doing great as he continues to recover from a drug overdose suffered in October of last year. Earlier this month, the former NBA player left the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he’d been for three months, and headed to a home in Calabasas, nearby where his wife, Khloe Kardashian, resides.

“Khloé continues to look after him,” a source told People Magazine on January 29. “Khloé visits him at his house and [Lamar Odom] hangs out at hers.”

When Lamar Odom was hospitalized last year, Kardashian immediately rushed to his side, where she remained for several days before he awoke from a coma. Once Lamar Odom was able to communicate, he was transferred, via medical helicopter, to Los Angeles, and Kardashian traveled in the helicopter with him. Also traveling to be with Lamar Odom when he was initially hospitalized was Kardashian’s sister, Kim, and mother, Kris Jenner, as well as Lamar Odom’s aunt, and his two children, Lamar Odom Jr. and Destiny Odom.

Although Lamar Odom and Kardashian separated in mid-2013, following rumors of possible drug use and affairs, the former couple remained close, on and off, in the years since their split.

“[Lamar Odom] still needs help walking,” the source continued. “[Lamar Odom] is not driving himself and instead has a driver. Whenever he leaves the house, he looks happy. He looks alert and often smiles. He is definitely looking more like the old Lamar.”

A Kardashian insider explained that while Lamar Odom “isn’t ‘back to normal’ by any means, he’s made so much progress since the overdose.”

“[Lamar Odom] can move around alone, and he can communicate much better. In the beginning, he couldn’t talk at all,” the insider told the magazine. “He knows how much Khloé has been there for him, and he is so grateful. The therapy can be incredibly frustrating and he has hard moments, but Lamar is a former athlete. He’s strong. And he really wants to get better.”

Earlier this week, Kardashian’s older sister, Kourtney, appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show, as People Magazine revealed, and during her guest spot, Kardashian called into the show, and spoke of Lamar Odom’s current state.

While chatting with the comedian on Monday, Kardashian said Lamar Odom’s long-term memory was great, but his short-term memory was lacking. However, as Kardashian pointed out, jokingly, “if I met someone earlier today I probably wouldn’t remember either, so that’s understandable.”

Kardashian also revealed that Lamar Odom had been spending plenty of time with her family, including Kourtney and her kids, Mason, 6; Penelope, 3; and Reign, 1.

“I think it makes him feel good to be around everyone too and to just be in a happy environment over obviously where [Lamar Odom] was,” she added.

Although it wasn’t previously believed that Lamar Odom’s health crisis would be chronicled for scenes of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, it has since been revealed that it will — at least in part. In a preview clip of the upcoming episodes of season 11, fans will hear the cast’s response to the shocking news, and likely, as the season continues, they will see the moments after. However, because the sneak peek did not show much video footage, it’s hard to say exactly what was filmed.
