DeLorean Back In Production: Iconic ‘Back To The Future’ Car To Be Mass-Produced — Will It Really Fly This Time?

The DeLorean is back into production. The iconic Back to the Future time machine will be manufactured in America. Although a license for mass production has been approved, eager customers will have to rush because a very small number of the cars will be made.

The DeLorean DMC-12, the car which shot to fame after being modified into a time machine in the Back to the Future movies, is making a comeback. The car, which hasn’t been manufactured for well over three decades, will soon hit the production floor in Humble, Texas. A company has been granted permission to start building rides at the plant.

The DeLorean DMC-12 was last manufactured about 35 years ago. Now the federal government has approved a bill to start manufacturing the car once again, reported WJHL. The catch is the approval is valid only for a small number of cars. The “low volume manufacturing bill” is expected to translate to about 300 cars, hinted the company’s CEO. The company that’s going to build the car is Texas-based Delorean Motor Company.

Stephen Wynne, of De Lorean Motors, originally formed the Delorean Motor Company way back in 1987. In 1995, Wynne bought the rights to the DeLorean brand from the parent company DMC. The CEO is an expert mechanic who has worked extensively on the futuristic looking DMC-125. His decades of experience earned him the skills needed to confidently procure the brand in order to keep the name and the iconic car alive. DMC has been kind enough to offer parts, services, and, on a few occasions, the completely modified “time machine” DeLorean DMC-12 for events. Needless to say, fans of the cult classic Back to the Future still make a serpentine queue to get a glimpse of the car.

For quite some time, the current company lovingly restored privately owned the DeLorean cars, but with this decision, the car could be once again in the open market, shared Wynne.

“The majority of what we have here are customer-owned cars that are in for restoration. It’s fantastic! It is a game changer for us. We’ve been wanting this to happen.”

Wynne currently has a few dozen DeLorean cars in the Texas plant. While a few are owned by the company, many have been shipped there from across the world with a request for detailed refurbishment. It is interesting to note that manufacturing new DeLorean cars was prohibited by law, revealed Wynne.

“That was a green light to go back into production. That was prohibited. It was against the law to do it. It’s huge for us.”

With the original supplies currently in stock, Wynne estimates about 300 authentic 1982 DeLorean DMC-12 could be built, reported Business Insider. Currently, building a single car takes about a month’s time. Wynne intends to bring down the time taken for production to about a week.

What to expect in the new DeLorean DMC-12? There won’t be any change in the way the car looks, confirmed Wynne.

“There’s no reason to change the appearance of the car. You have like a fiberglass underbody.”

While the exteriors and the trademark “Gullwing” doors won’t be changed, the interiors will be upgraded for modern-day navigation. While the company hasn’t confirmed any specifications, given the fact that the car has a lightweight fiberglass body, the new DeLorean DMC-12 should be extremely lightweight and, if coupled with a powerful engine, blazing fast. However, unlike the car that flies at the end of Back to the Future, this one won’t take off or hover. It also won’t come equipped with the “flux capacitor” for time travel.

New DeLorean DMC-12 is expected to roll out of the production line early next year, shared Wynne. He added that while the refurbished cars go for anywhere between $45,000 a $55,000, a new DeLorean could be priced a little less than $100,000.
