JK Rowling, ‘Harry Potter’ Cast Members React To Alan Rickman’s Death
JK Rowling recently learned about the passing of actor Alan Rickman and took to Twitter to send out her condolences. Rowling knew Rickman, as she worked with him on the Harry Potter films. Rickman played the role of Severus Snape, a character very near and dear to Rowling — and to the Potterheads around the world.
There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman's death. He was a magnificent actor & a wonderful man.

My thoughts are with Rima and the rest of Alan's family. We have all lost a great talent. They have lost part of their hearts.

JK Rowling wasn’t the only person who was deeply pained by this morning’s news. According to ABC News, other members of the Harry Potter cast and crew have also reacted to the passing of the beloved Rickman. Working on several films with the actor, many formed quite a strong bond with him. Of course, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint were quite young when they started filming the movies, and they have all previously talked about how wonderful he was to work with and how he was able to put them at ease.

Terribly sad news about the passing of Alan Rickman. A funny and engaging person who put a shy young actor at ease when I was on HP.

JK Rowling may not have created Severus Snape for Alan Rickman, but she could have fooled the world. He portrayed the character perfectly, bringing Snape to life with ease — or, at least, that’s how he made it seem. While Rickman is known for many other movies (such as Die Hard), his role as Professor Snape will forever be cherished.
Back in 2011, Alan Rickman did an interview where he talked about how much (or how little) JK Rowling actually told him about his character’s fate, according to Hit Fix.
“She gave me one tiny, little, left of field piece of information that helped me think that he was more complicated and that the story was not going to be as straight down the line as everybody thought. If you remember when I did the first film she’d only written three or four books, so nobody knew where it was really going except her. And its was important for her that I know something, but she only gave me a tiny piece of information which helped me think it was a more ambiguous route. What I knew was he was a human being and not an automaton and I knew there was some sense of protection for Harry or I worked that out. It was enough to know, I didn’t know he was a double agent.”
Of course, JK Rowling made Snape’s end perfectly tragic in the Deathly Hallows, and the film did his death complete justice. Not one true Potter fan can watch the scene without tearing up, no matter how many times they’ve seen it. The connection that so many Harry Potter fans had with Professor Snape they also feel with Alan Rickman, the man who embodied him with such aplomb. Many tears have been shed today and many more will be as fans watch Rickman in the Harry Potter films again and again.
