‘Star Wars Episode VIII’ May Reveal The Answer To One Of ‘Star Wars’ Most Unanswered Questions: Who Is Rey Really?

With the release of the new Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens, fans had a chance to meet all new characters while seeing the reappearance of old ones. One character, in particular, has captured the hearts of many fans, Daisy Ridley’s character Rey. The seventh installment of the franchise left many unanswered questions, including the identity of Rey.

The International Business Times reported that director J. J. Abrams, although not directing the next episode, hinted that fans may receive the answer to who Rey is when Episode 8 premieres in May 2017.

“Obviously it’s not for me to talk about in this moment because this is Rian’s story to continue now. The last thing I’m going to do is reveal something that he would be upset about. I want to make sure that Rian gets the courtesy that he showed me.”

Abrams admitted in December that he had seen the script for Episode 8, which is already finished, and he liked what he saw. Many fan theories about who Rey is have been put forth, and they include that she may be the daughter of Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker, while others believe she may be a relative of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Many believe the first theory because during Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the lightsaber that belonged to both Anakin and Luke Skywalker called out to her.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the biggest speculation until now had been the reappearance of Hayden Christensen in the role of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Vader and the Emperor died at the end of Episode 6. Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi revealed that Darth Vader was really Anakin Skywalker and that Princess Leia and Luke were brother and sister and Anakin’s children. The reaction to the return of Hayden Christensen has been mixed as some fans liked his performance as Anakin Skywalker while others did not.

Cinema Blend reported that Rey may be far more important to the Star Wars universe than anyone imagined. Episode 9 director Colin Trevorrow wouldn’t reveal who Rey really is, but he did reveal that the new saga really is Rey’s story even though so much effort was given to developing Finn in the build up to Episode 7.

“Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens, but in the entire galaxy. She deserves it. We’ll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was something that happened a long time ago, far away, and we’re just telling you what happened.”

The interesting aspect of this story is that there is the possibility that who Rey really is may not be completely revealed until Star Wars Episode 9 since Colin Trevorrow is the director of the final episode in the trilogy. Because Rey may be far more important than previously believed, it may take the next two episodes to tell her story.

The origins of Rey apparently play an integral part in the third Star Wars trilogy, and that information is being built into the Star Wars canon in a way that flows naturally from the story. Based on the previously established plot points of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, one of the theories that have been suggested is the truth.

In any event, Star Wars fans will have to wait until May 26, 2017, to find out what happens to Rey next and any revelations about her identity as this is when the next installment of the trilogy will be released. Star Wars Episode 8 will be directed by Rian Johnson, who also wrote the script for that installment.
