‘Outlander’ And Caitriona Balfe Snubbed At The 2016 Golden Globes, But Sam Heughan Takes The Red Carpet By Storm [Photos]

While the 2016 Golden Globes featured plenty of moments to get excited about, many fans were disappointed when both Caitriona Balfe and Outlander failed to win anything. Despite going home empty-handed, fans were at least treated to another appearance by Balfe and co-star Sam Heughan, who showed up in a big way to support the show and his on-screen wife.

Although a certain level of disappointment is typical with the Golden Globes, Outlander’s snubbing is surprising given the show’s popularity. For her part, Balfe was up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series.

Even though Heughan was snubbed from the ceremony, the actor showed up to support Balfe and Outlander’s bid for a Globe. According to TV Line, Heughan appeared confident on the red carpet and looked like he had won something.

Heughan wore a perfectly fit black suit with a bowtie for the event. With his hair pulled back, the actor smiled for the camera and make a big impression on the red carpet, despite not being nominated for an award.

For her part, PopSugar is reporting that Balfe was equally stunning and wore an elegant black dress for the ceremony. The actress completed her look with a pair of silver earrings, making her appearance at the event one of the more memorable ones to date.

According to the Washington Post, Balfe lost the trophy to Taraji Henson, who won the award for her part on Empire. Other nominees in the category included Robin Wright (House of Cards), Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder), and Eva Green (Penny Dreadful).

“Cookies for everyone tonight! My treat,” Henson said after winning the award. “Who knew that playing an ex-convict would take me all around the globe? I’ve waited 20 years for this. You gon’ wait.”

Meanwhile, Outlander was in the running for Best Television Series Drama. Unfortunately, despite being one of the favorites, the hit time-traveling series lost out to Mr. Robot, a first-year show currently airing on USA Network. The rest of the competition in the category included Game of Thrones, Narcos, and Empire.

Apparently, even the producers of Mr. Robot were surprised that it had beat out the competition to win the award. Throughout its first season, Mr. Robot drew in some two million viewers per episode on USA Network. This number is significantly lower than some of the other shows in the category, including Game of Thrones and Empire.

However, according to Bustle, Mr. Robot deserved to win the award, despite its low ratings. This is mainly due to the show’s talented group of actors, a great storyline, and its loyal fanbase, elements that Mr. Robot shares with Outlander.

Even still, the popularity of Outlander made it one of the favorites to win the award. In the fact, the show’s large fan base is one reason why the series managed to take home a 2016 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Cable Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show.

In the end, the popularity of Outlander was not enough to beat out Mr. Robot. Even though the show failed to win, fans can, at least, be excited about the show’s nomination, especially given how Heughan was not in the running despite his integral role in the series.

Considering how Outlander has only completed one season, there is a good chance that the show will be included in next year’s Golden Globes. This should give the Hollywood Foreign Press Association plenty of time to get on board with the show. Perhaps Heughan will manage to receive a nomination and get the recognition he deserves.
