Zayn Malik, One Direction Breakup: They’re No Longer Speaking

Zayn Malik seems to be having problems with the rest of the guys in One Direction, so much so that he says he hasn’t been hearing from them lately. His days with the pop group are certainly done, but in a new interview with Billboard magazine, Zayn details what it was like having his creative process diminished by being in the group and where he is now in his personal life.

“[The band and I] weren’t allowed to say certain things, or word [lyrics] the way we would want to. I’d sit and wonder, ‘If the fans knew how it worked, what would they think?’ My argument was: People are more intelligent than that. They want to hear what’s real, so why don’t we write some stuff that we’re actually going through?”

Zayn quit the band last year near the end of March, which was followed by public Twitter feuds between members of the group. 1D fans assumed that not everything was well between Malik and everybody else in 1D, but Zayn told the magazine that wasn’t the case at all. “There are no sides to pick,” Malik says. “We’re not going head-to-head.”

Zayn Malik, however, still was drifting away form the band. While he said “indie rock” was what the other guys were listening to, that genre of music was just something he was no longer interested in. As happy as he was being in the band, his own personal musical taste was carving out a different path for him.

The guys have been keeping their distance, but no one is allegedly angry or hateful about the situation.

“The truth of it is, you can think one thing about a situation and the total opposite can happen,” Zayn admits. “I had every intention of remaining friends with everybody, but I guess certain phone numbers have changed and I haven’t received calls from a lot of people.”

Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson first formed 1D and signed with Simon Cowell’s record label after placing third on The X Factor in 2010. By June 2012, the group represented a $50 million business empire with their earnings being listed at $130 million last June by Forbes. They have created five albums, received four MTV Video Music Awards, five Brit Awards, seven American Music Awards, 11 MTV Europe Music Awards and 19 Teen Choice Awards out of 19 nominations.

Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards canceled their engagement soon after his departure from One Direction; however, he has recently been dating model Gigi Hadid, the sister of model Bella Hadid. While the two were friends before the romance, social media pictures of the two quickly revealed their relationship. Malik says he needs to be challenged by a woman.

“Also, I like girls that are a bit chunky in certain areas—the nice areas. I like a fuller woman. I enjoy an intellectual conversation as well, where someone can construct a sentence beyond what hair and makeup they’re wearing, and talk about something political or about the world. I like an opinion.”

Though he thought they would be friends for life, Zayn has realized that will not be the case, but it seemingly won’t stop him from continuing with his own solo career in music. Made in the A.M., One Direction’s fifth and final album, was recorded without Malik. Reportedly, he has yet to hear the album in its entirety. After hearing more than one song, he apparently was not a fan. Zayn Malik’s solo career will definitely be worth looking forward to.
