New Orleans Saints Rumors: Coach Sean Payton Is On The Radar Of The New York Giants

The New Orleans Saints have just one more game in the 2015 NFL season since they are not sniffing the playoffs this year. Once the season is over, a lot of questions will need to be answered and changes will need to be made. It’s not known if quarterback Drew Brees will return, and now rumors are rumbling that the New York Giants could have an interest in head coach Sean Payton.

There have been a lot of rumors swirling this season that Payton may not end up returning to the Saints next season. Actually, some believe that he doesn’t want to be back in New Orleans and he may look to get out by being traded or bought out.

Payton’s name has been connected to the San Diego Chargers, Indianapolis Colts, and Dallas Cowboys in different reports. Now, another team is reportedly interested in the Super Bowl winning coach when it isn’t even known if he will be available.

According to NJ.com, the New York Giants may end up having a head coach opening at the end of the season. It’s not yet known what Giants president and CEO John Mara will do, but Tom Coughlin’s future with the team is currently in doubt.

The Giants have missed the playoffs four seasons in a row, and six of the last seven. Their lone trip to the playoffs in that timeframe was in 2011 when they won the Super Bowl. The decision may come easy for Mara and the Giants after this week’s season finale.

CBS Sports is reporting that Coughlin may actually end up retiring at the end of the season, but that’s a decision he still has to make. Coughlin will turn 70 during the Giants’ training camp next year and he may just want to be done.

If Coughlin decides to retire, or if he’s fired, the Giants could just end up promoting offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo to head coach. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has a “strong relationship” with McAdoo which means that he could stick around on the staff if Ben is made the new head coach.

Word is that Sean Payton would have interest in the head coaching position with the New York Giants if it opens up, but he is still under contract with the Saints. The Giants could “trade” for Payton, but it would likely cost them some rather high draft picks and a number of them.

That’s a high price to pay for any player or coach. It could make the Giants think two or three times about making such a deal.

After the New Orleans Saints beat the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Payton was asked about the numerous rumors that he could be out of New Orleans after this season, according to NOLA.com.

‘They happen on Sundays because it’s an important news day and they’re Twitter, basically, statements, and I can’t control those. I know it’s competitive. When you look at Sunday morning, that’s when you see a lot of, and not just with regards to me, but whether it’s injury news or any type of news, that seems to be the beginning of the NFL news cycle. I’ve said it before, and again, there’s nothing I can do to control it.”

Despite two losing seasons in a row, Payton reportedly has faith in the direction that the Saints are heading and said he would like to be a part of it. He likes the ownership of the team and the stability and leadership but his position is not up to him.

The New Orleans Saints and New York Giants could see a big overhaul after the 2015 regular season and rumors have all sorts of things happening. Tom Coughlin may retire. Sean Payton could be traded, or he may stay put. Much is being talked about now, but not much is actually known.
