Steven Moffat Says ‘Doctor Who’ Season Finale Is ‘Pretty Emotional Stuff,’ Likely To Leave Fans A ‘Bit Devastated’

Warning: Article contains spoilers!

Steven Moffat recently spoke out about the upcoming Doctor Who season finale and explains that the episode is chock full of some “pretty emotional stuff.” He also warns that fans may be left “a tiny bit devastated.” Though the Doctor Who producer did not go into detail, he did promise a show that would prove “quite dark” to viewers.

Television producer Steven Moffat is opening up about the hotly anticipated season finale of Doctor Who to Entertainment Weekly, noting that fans should be prepared for an episode that is “quite dark” and says that many fans may be a “bit devastated” by the plot. Moffat claims that the entire Doctor Who season finale is emotional and that he hopes it will leave fans satisfied until a new season.

“[The finally will leave fans] hopefully satisfied, and pleased, and a tiny bit devastated. It’s pretty emotional stuff. We get quite dark. It’s quite a journey.”

The Doctor Who season finale is titled “Hell Bent” and follows the Doctor to his home planet of Gallifrey where, in the episode teasers, he appears prepared to battle with his fellow Time Lords and possibly die. The teaser shows The Doctor standing before a group of Time Lords holding guns before dropping to the ground. The Time Lords are then seen standing in front of an “extraction chamber” in which someone notes a “regeneration is in progress.”

If the Doctor, or at least the regenerated version played by Peter Capaldi, is set to die in the season finale, surely Moffat would have had stronger words about the finale episode than “a tiny bit devastating.” Though the Doctor is not likely to die in the season finale, it is unclear who else may be on the chopping block. With fans still reeling over Clara Oswald’s somewhat dark exit from the show, who is left for Moffat to kill off that fans would have an emotional connection to in the show?

One possible candidate is Missy. Though she is somewhat of a “villain” in the show, Missy has won the hearts of some viewers. Will she potentially sacrifice herself for the doctor or will be discover a more sinister plot brewing behind the Master. If Missy isn’t headed to the cutting block, the immortal Ashildr could be involved in the finale in some fashion. Will she run and hide after Clara’s demise or will she play a part in the big season finale?

The BBC asks a few interesting question in their synopsis noting that the questions that may very well be answered in the season finale involve the Hybrid and the Doctor’s confession dial.

“If you took everything from him, betrayed him, trapped him, and broke both his hearts…how far might the Doctor go? Returning to Gallifrey, the Doctor faces the Time Lords in a struggle that will take him to the end of time itself. Who is the Hybrid? And what is the Doctor’s confession?”

Once the answers are revealed and Doctor Who fans are “a bit devastated” by the season finale, they won’t have to wait long for more surprises. The Doctor Who Christmas special is also set to air on December 25, 2015, and will feature a fan favorite, River Song. The episode is titled “The Husbands of River Song” and features the Doctor’s former wife in a time stream during which she does not know the Doctor’s new face. Will she recognize her future lover or will Moffat finally wrap up River Song’s character for good?
