Adele’s New Album ’25’ Won’t Be Available On Spotify And Other Streaming Services


Adele’s highly-anticipated album, 25, won’t be available on streaming services on Friday, CNN reports.

Spotify, one of the largest streaming services in the world, released a statement to Gizmodo following Adele’s decision.

“We love and respect Adele, as do her 24m fans on Spotify. We hope that she will give those fans the opportunity to enjoy 25 on Spotify alongside 19 and 21 very soon.”

According to multiple sources, Adele’s 25 album won’t be available for streaming on other services such as Apple Music or Deezer as well.

It’s not the first time a big time music artist refused to have his or her music streamed on Spotify. In late 2014, Taylor Swift decided to pull her music from Spotify over complaints that the streaming service isn’t paying or compensating artists enough. Swift recently criticized Apple Music as well for not paying artists during the first three-month free trial of their streaming service.

It isn’t clear if the decision to not make 25 available on any streaming service was entirely Adele’s own or whether the record label had something to do with it. But for now, the only way to enjoy Adele’s record is for you to buy it – or illegally download it on BitTorrent.

There have been many other artists who decided to hold back or delay releases from streaming services over the last few years, the most notable of which are Adele herself, Coldplay, Radiohead, Bjork, and the Black Keys. Going by this trend, there’s a chance that Adele and her record label will eventually allow 25 to be made available on streaming services. There’s no telling when that will occur, and it probably won’t for a while.

“Adele is a music-industry anomaly. She could release her album on cassette only and it would still be the biggest-selling album of the year,” an industry source tells Billboard.

Adele’s third studio album, 25, is on its way to become the highest-selling album of the year once it’s released worldwide on Friday.

“Hello,” 25‘s carrier single, debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in its first day of release. It’s been downloaded 1.1 million times in a span of a week, beating the previous record set by Flo Rida, whose track “Right Round” was downloaded 600,000 times back in February 2009. “Hello” is Adele’s most well-received single since “Someone Like You” from her album 21. “Someone Like You” became Adele’s first number one single in the UK charts, maintaining its top spot for five weeks.

Ironically, Adele’s 25 album has benefited from streaming. According to the Guardian, the music video for “Hello” was streamed 400 million times on YouTube in its first week of release. Adele collaborated with French Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan for the video.

Sales forecasts for Adele’s third studio album are nothing short of astronomical, which is not surprising given the overwhelming reception to “Hello.” According to Billboard, 2.6 million copies of Adele’s third album have already been sent to record shops all over the US, the largest order for a newly-released CD in a decade.

Adele’s 25 will be made available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon, and in shops on Friday. In anticipation of the release, some record stores are offering to sell the much-anticipated Adele record before midnight to eager fans who can’t wait to get their hands on the album.

Adele performed a concert at the Radio City Music Hall on Tuesday, which is set to be broadcast on NBC next month. Adele is also scheduled to perform on Saturday Night Live on Saturday.

As expected, reviews from numerous publications have started coming out of the woodwork days before the album’s actual release. Adele, who was worried about living up to the success of her previous albums, can rest easy now as the reviews for 25 have been mostly positive.
