Sam Smith Unwell: Starts Year-Long Break Early By Cancelling Event

Sam Smith has made a big name for himself in a short period of time. The singer/songwriter debuted last year with the hit “In the Lonely Hour,” and now he is responsible for the theme song “The Writing’s on the Wall” for the new James Bond movie, Spectre. That’s pretty amazing. Luncheons, like the one he attended on Thursday afternoon in West Hollywood, are new to the star, but he should probably get used to them.

When it comes to writing the James Bond theme, Sam Smith told the Los Angeles Times that you have to do what you know.

“That’s all I can do, really, as a writer. When you’re given an opportunity to do a job like this, I think you’ve got to play to your strengths.”

Smith also said he and co-writer Jimmy Napes wanted the song to be vulnerable and match the “raw” performance Daniel Craig gave in the movie.

“I wanted to make it James Bond’s diary entry.”

“The Writing’s on the Wall” isn’t just the theme song for one of the most famous movie franchises in the world — it’s also a record-breaker. Global News reports an interview Sam Smith had with ET Canada in which they discuss the success of the song and Smith’s shock at this success.

“It’s unbelievable. It genuinely hasn’t sunk in. I was actually mainly surprised with the number one because of the type of song it was. In this day and age of music, classical songs like that don’t really get the time of day.”

Sam Smith also revealed how inspired he was by the script for Spectre.

“The [Spectre] script inspired me to write this one – and the hunger to write a Bond song which I’ve had in me since I was a little boy.”

With this huge success under his belt, what is next for Sam Smith? Apparently, it’s a well-deserved break. Earlier this year, Smith took a short break to have surgery done on his vocal cords and was back to speaking three weeks later and singing within two months. But now Sam Smith wants to take a longer break.

Entertainment Weekly recently reported that Sam Smith appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and talked about his anticipate break, which will be a year long! He explained to Ellen that he needs to live his life in order to have fresh material to write about. This living includes kissing some boys.

“My music is so personal and I need to live my life. I basically need to kiss some more boys so I can write some songs.”

In true Ellen style, Sam Smith was gifted with a fabulous piece of furniture to see him through his time off. It came in the form of a La-Z-Boy that included an attached mini piano and music stand. The interview was uploaded to Dailymotion.

While Sam Smith has made it abundantly clear that he is taking a break, it may have arrived sooner than planned. Smith had a scheduled performance on Saturday night at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s fifth annual Art + Film Gala, but he had to cancel at the last minute due to illness. Perez Hilton reports Smith’s representative released a statement.

“Sam Smith has fallen ill and regretfully was unable to perform tonight at the LACMA Art + Film Gala. He was required to go on vocal rest.”

Whether he will appear again before he begins his one-year hiatus from music remains to be seen. However, there is no doubt there will plenty of room for him on the music scene when he gets back from kissing the boys.
