Transgender Man Finds Out He Is Pregnant Despite 10 Years Of Hormone Use, Forced To Come Out Because Of Pregnancy

A transgender man, 29-year-old Kayden Coleman, had been transitioning for 10 years, and he recently found out that he was 21 weeks pregnant. Coleman had been on hormone treatments for 10 years to suppress the ability to get pregnant. However, at the time of conception, the transgender man had been off hormones to prepare for an upcoming mastectomy. For doctors to perform the mastectomy, the transgender man had to be off the hormones for at least six weeks. It was during that time that Coleman became pregnant.

The Daily Mail reports that Kayden Coleman, 29, has been transiting to a man for the past 10 years. During that time, the transgender man took hormones, which resulted in Coleman growing a beard, more body hair, and suppressed the ability of pregnancy. However, as part of the transition to a man, Coleman wanted a mastectomy. Therefore, doctors told him not to take his hormones for six weeks prior to the surgery. At some point during the six weeks he was off the hormones, Coleman became pregnant despite the 10 years prior use of the hormones.

“I never thought about getting pregnant. Because of the male hormones, I didn’t think it was a possibility. It was ­definitely a surprise.”

Twenty-one weeks into the pregnancy, Coleman says that he was experiencing back pain and felt like a pillow was under his stomach, but there was no pillow. Therefore, Coleman says he jokingly told his boyfriend that maybe he was pregnant. The joke became all too real when Coleman decided to actually take the pregnancy test and it came back positive. The transgender man says that doctors informed him that he was 21 weeks pregnant, and the couple began making preparations for a baby.

According to the Mirror, part of those preparations included coming out as transgender to his boyfriend Elijah’s parents. Elijah says that it was a very personal thing, and he wanted to allow Kayden to explain the situation himself in his own time. However, with the birth of the baby quickly approaching, the couple knew they would have some explaining to do when a baby mysterious appeared. Therefore, they decided to go ahead and tell Elijah’s parents that Kayden was transgender before the birth.

“It was such a personal thing that I felt if Kayden wanted them to know he should tell them himself. But when we found out Kayden was pregnant we knew we had to tell them. How could we explain the baby when she popped up after a couple of months?”

Kayden notes that the forced “coming out” was difficult, as he had lived as a man for the past 10 years. In fact, many people did not even know he was a transgender man. Therefore, with the pregnancy, Coleman was forced to explain exactly how he was capable of getting pregnant. Kayden continued to live as a man during the pregnancy and says that they will explain to their daughter, Azaelia, her unusual story when she is 5-years-old. For now, the pair says they are just enjoying their time with their now 22-month-old daughter and will worry about telling her the story of her two fathers when she is older.

Since he continued to live as a man throughout his pregnancy, Kayden says he did receive some strange looks. In fact, he says one woman at a store said, “Honey, you look pregnant?” When the transgender man responded that he was, the woman simply wouldn’t believe it. Though he says that the general population treated him oddly, he says medical staff treated him just like any other expectant mom — except for the constant barrage of medical students coming into the room. Kayden says that he finally had to request a c-section after four days of labor and a never-ending stream of curious medical students.

“All the medical people were really nice but I did kind of feel like an experiment. While I was in labour, medical students kept coming in and out. It got to the point where I had to put my foot down and demand a c-section.”
