Mariah Carey Joins ‘LEGO Batman Movie’ As Mayor — Not Commissioner Gordon
Actress Mariah Carey reportedly joined the cast of The LEGO Batman Movie — but not as Commissioner Gordon.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the longtime singer is providing the voice for the Mayor of Gotham City instead of Commissioner Gordon — an iconic role that is favored by most fans and critics of the Dark Knight.

The LEGO Batman Movie is a spin-off film for the 2014 box-office hit The LEGO Movie, which featured the voices of such actors and actresses as Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks, Channing Tatum, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, and Will Ferrell.
Known primarily for her successful singing career, Mariah Carey has dabbled in Hollywood as an actress over the years in quite a few films, as well.
Her big-screen film debut was a supporting role in the 1999 film The Bachelor, starring Chris O’Donnell and Renee Zellweger. She has also starred in such movies as WiseGirls, Death of a Dynasty, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, Precious, and The Butler.
However, Mariah Carey’s decision to join the cast of The LEGO Batman Movie allows her to finally add “voice actress” to her expanding resume as a Hollywood actress.

The mother of two is definitely in good company, especially when you consider the actors and actresses that have already been confirmed as cast members for The LEGO Batman Movie.
- Batman: Will Arnett (Arrested Development, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
- Batgirl: Rosario Dawson (Top Five, Gimme Shelter)
- Robin: Michael Cera (Superbad, Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist)
- Joker: Zach Galifianakis (Due Date, Hangover)
- Alfred: Ralph Fiennes (Spectre, The Grand Budapest Hotel)

Will Arnett is currently the only actor with a confirmed role in The LEGO Batman Movie that also played the same role in the franchise’s first film.
In a June, 2015, interview with BuzzFeed, Mariah opened up about her desire to do so much more than she has done in the past with the future of her acting career.
“I have so many dreams that I haven’t yet realized. I would say that there is a lot of things in the acting world that I want to do. And I am so grateful to people like Lee Daniels, and even Brett Ratner, for having fun, working with me, and pushing me to limits where I definitely would not have wanted to go. There are a lot things I have on the horizon that I’m going to be doing: acting, singing, even writing for movies. I think I’d even like to score a movie — I don’t know why that hasn’t happened yet, clearly someone isn’t on their game.”
Chris Miller, one of The LEGO Batman Movie writers and directors, opened up about their overall vision for the film in a November, 2014, interview with Empire. Miller confirmed that “every era of Batman filmmaking will be acknowledged,” especially since “there have been so many interpretations of Batman” over the years.
The Gotham City Mayor in the Dark Knight trilogy (played by actor Nestor Carbonell) was a key player in the underlying stories of each of those films up until his death in The Dark Knight Rises. The mayor also made random appearances in many of the other Batman movies that hit the big-screen over the years. However, Mariah Carey just might make history by introducing a female mayor for the very first time.
